Power diodes mate.

You will want something with a high current rating. At least above 10 amp and thats bare minimal.

3 of these are ideal: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ZR1324&CATID =33&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form=CAT&ProdCodeOnly =&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=& amp;priceMax=&SUBCATID=379
Or a rectifier from a car alternator.

Read Glenns page about rewiring the F&P. It has all the info you will ever need.

I know I'm a newbie, and newbies know less than nothing,but----the topic is F & P motors in WA
In the USA, WA stands for Washington state, and there isn't any reference anywhere to finding a mottor in Washington. There was at one time, because I remember reading it. What happened??? I'm in Colorado, USA, and I'm looking for an F&P motor that doesn't take my whole annual income for costs and shipping. Shipping from Australia is 4 to 5 times the cost of the motor. Help!!!! Please!!!!

Down under WA means Western Australia, our largest state ( about the size of Europe ).

Yeah Randysworkshop was looking into supplying the F&P for the USA market, and he was developing his own windmill design, but I dont know how he went. Try sending him an email.

im no closer to getting a f&p motor :o
on otherpower they made an air core alternator out of wood and neos, the bloke seemed to think it was quite reasonable. maybe i should just do that.

I already talked to Randy. This is a clip from his email.
"Shipping approx 26# to your zip would be $22.00. Not too bad. The motor (rotor, stator, shaft, bearings and holder) with the 70 page EcoInnovation manual is $195.00, the 70 amp bridge rectifier is $12.00, my Custom Pivot is $35.00. Let me know." All those are US dollars.
Also tried Ecoinnovation and sangeff. And a new F & P motor here is $376.00 US.
Looks like makourain and I are both going to be building with popsicle sticks and baling wire.

yeah popsticks and baling wire is right
my dad is a sheetmetal worker/welder/carpenter etc all those trade type skills.
hes got an old rusted brake disc for me i can use for a stator, very heavy but you guys have mentioned brake discs more than once.
perhaps if i use jarrah (very hard wood) to make a wooden stator it would be strong enough for a turbine
i can get jarrah for free so it wouldnt be a problem, im not sure but i think tricky dickies sells enameled wire, so i can just buy some from there and wrape it around some thick nails
am i missing anything? other than the magnets that is.

If you're not adverse to a bit of work, you may find better alternatives to tricky for ECW. Buying from someone like that will always be much more expensive per metre.

Do you have an "electric motor rewinding" company in town? They'll have huge drums of the stuff.

Or... you can have a scratch around the junkyards and look for things with lots of enameled copper wire that you can pull apart and re-use. Large transformers are a good one (but not toroidal cores) - you can pull the end off a transformer and slide the whole former off a lot of them. Some electric motors come apart easily. An old welder may have suitable wire on the primary.

Look about and think whats in stuff.

Then again, while you're wandering about the scrapyard or caryard, look for other things you might be able to use.

A large auto alternator, or truck alternator, while not ideal is probably going to be cheaper, easier and more efficient than building one in the manner you mention. Sure, they want more RPM, but nobody said it had to be a direct drive from the turbine. Belt drive to increase RPM is quite workable and probably gives you more scope for mounting things too. (Upside, you can start the turbine with the alternator "off" - you'll dramatically reduce the starting speed this way).

A 100A 12V alternator is about a kilowatt, so nothing to sneeze at.

auto alternator with some neos on the rotor instead of coils would be cool :D.
them needing faster rpm is no good, i live in a low wind area, the wind only gets fast in the winter or in the afternoon. so i need a low rpm type jobby.
pulling the enameled wire off old junked motors or transformers is a good idea, ill do that. since i know a place to get plenty :D

there anything wrong with using jarrah and nails for the stator?

F&P are great but not the only thing you can use for your wind system. Car alternators would be at the bottom of my list.

See if you can find a place that junked old main frame computers, old tape drives and some old disk drives. I mean those old tape drives they used to show on sci-fi programs, had 48V DC motors that were also very good generators.   They produced useful DC voltage at quite low RPM.

If you can find any low voltage DC motor, (and they were not just used in computer but also in stuff like invalid scooters, fork lift trucks (I think), golf buggies, printing machinery, treadmills etc) just twist the leads together and try to turn the shaft by hand. If shorting the leads makes it hard or even impossible to turn the shaft you are on to a winner!

For a small one you could try playing with a junked battery drill. You wont get much power but the gear box will spin the motor really fast compared to the chuck.

Hi Makourain
Have alook in E-bay under (washing machine) as it easlier to get one instead running back and forward to the tip maybe lucky you might find one in 6 months time so if you can afford to by one on E-bay? maybe l might able to help you .

Any kerbside rubbish pickup finds lots of F&Ps on the road. Also read the Sunday Times (free section) and the Quokka, which comes out on Thursdays. Be quick then, pick up the Quokka and jump in your car. Page one is the free section with lotsa F&Ps inside. You will have more luck with the Quokka than with the Balcatta tip.

Good hunting from another Sandgroper!
