hi

the machine  is a drum type radial arragement with 16 poles and a 48 slot stator using neo magnets. the voltages can be any depending on stator winding and connection (star/delta). side furling provides control in high wind,prop dia 3.6 metres slip rings are fitted so no cable twist, very simple machine using auto wheel bearings and stub axles. regulation uses a pl20 in shunt mode and external shunt to measure current and nichrome wire dump coils take excess enegy from the battery. the design is my own but based on mr piggot's original brakedrum alternator

Lovely machine--more Pic,pls  can we see pic of how you constructed it and the slip rings.

I have made eight machines for friends and family and have the process fairly refined.The constuction is labor intensive, but may get a little easier when i finish biulding my copy lathe for faster blade making. I am biulding two machines now and will make some more if enough demand  gets me motivated . My location is the beautiful city of Adelaide South Australia

Hi Peter.

Thats a nice looking stator. How did you come by the laminations? Did you make them or are they from a motor?

I have been tempted to laser cut a set of laminations, but they would only be mild steel and not the correct magnetic spec steel. I planned to paint them before stacking together to reduce eddy currents. But I heard mild steel would give poor performance, so gave up on the idea. I would like to revisit the idea one day.

Hi Glenn

the laminations are made by me in a 2 1/4 ton press with a indexing table which punches out the slots.

I have made a set with proper electrical steel (silicon) the were very hard on the tooling and very expensive unless buying in tonnes, so I made a set from soft steel ahh yes i can hear everyone yelling hysteresis,,!!! hysteresis!!! losses!!! B-H curves ectect blah blah blah well the results are pretty good , the stator does get hot when the turbine is being pushed but it does'nt seem to worry it, under 'normal' operating conditions it quiet happily puts out 500-700 watts @ approx 5.5- 7.0 m/s without any apparent problems.

I suspect that at higher voltages and frequecies soft steel would not be so good.

Hi Peter, Lovely work , I think I saw your work some time back of you stamping out the stator lams,??, somewhere,can't remember. Can you please post some more pics of the stator close up and the rotor,or post a link to your pic's. ? . if you have any.

I see you are using square tube for the mast , . I have used 3x3x 3/8 equal angle back to back- a bit heavy and I get a bit of bending while it is being raised and lowered, but so far it's not a worry. My big winch hauls it very easily,just a bit worried on the lowering action -so far so good and the gearing of the winch slows it to a stop in a second or so.

Hello Bruce

I had a look at the pic of the tower it does look like it's square but

it actually 89mm NB round...    The tower in the pic is 12m long    2 sections of  sched 40 water pipe 7x7x7 rope  it also bends a bit when tilting but

no problems. I use a tifor winch to operate the tilting, a bit slow but

is under control at all times. your tower looks pretty good do those trees interfere with the mill? Wasn't me you saw making lams, don't have a pic site

hi peter, actually the trees are on the 'downwind" area(even though they are uphill of the tower). I cleared the area and left a 5 foot stump of bloodwood some 2 foot 6 inches in dia . soaked it in creosote for 6 months ,so it should see me out.

still trying to remember who posted a pic of him stamping out lams.

My guys are rigid steel 7 strand line guy wire from the electrical line construction company. the steel anchor pieces go down to a "deadman" about 3 feet down and are concreted in-had to use a jack hammer into rock ,so they are not going anywhere fast ,lol.

Hiya Peter,

                Eh mate looks like we're almost neighbours as I'm based at Kanmantoo not that far from Callington. That picture of your mill looks absoutly awesum and if you have the time maybe we could catch up. I just got my first F&P motor so I'm on making that up and I do have my own machineshop and plenty of gear but with 85 acres to look after the shed time can get a bit thin.

using a jig to fit stator into magnet drum, found out the hard way

that neo's have loads of attraction (nearly chopped off my little pinky) and once assembled I could not pull them back out. with the

jig its safe ond easy
