all you need now is a windmill that turns as fast as a router. why would you come on a windmill site and ask advice if you intend to ignore it? |

Hi, the Helibug group sells RC controlled projects. They want to offer a battery charger using a PMA. The group on this site has knowledge and experience of PMA's. I could be wrong and corrections welcome. just because your a GURU or forum administer does not mean your always correct :) |

The problem is the RPM and the construction. The RPM needed to get the power advertised is WAY to high for windmill applications. Decades of experience has shown that gearing up a alternator any more the 1:2 just does not work, there are losses and lots of issues that I wont go into, other than to say, its just not done. If it was practical to gear up a alternator for a windmill, we would all be using vehicle alternators instead of using the low rpm alternators that we use. Vehicle alternators are robust, reliable and even a small one can exceed 1000 watts. But we do not use them because of the RPM/gearing issues. Most of us have at some point tried, but failed. Also the Helibug's construction will not last on a windmill tower. Its just not robust enough to survive a storm. Its neat, but not practical. Its a good teaching tool, but wont be suitable for a windmill. A F&P can make similar power, about 1 watt per RPM. At 900 RPM, a F&P would be making around 900 watts. You can pick up a F&P for less than $50, and it uses serious bearings and is very rugged. Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |
