Hi, I tried the Soma email but no reply. I am replacing a small wind generator with the one above which I bought secondhand. I didn't realise but I only have two 25sqmm cables going the 50 meters to the old one and the Soma is three phase. i don't want to run another cable so am thinking of mounting the three phase rectifier at the base of the generator and running DC on my existing cables. I'm not sure of the DC volts and current output of the Soma in relation to wind speed but guess at lower wind speed the voltage produced will be affected by voltage drop. I'm just wondering if any one would know how this setup would work? If it will have a problem with charging a 24 volt battery bank, I can use the Soma output to heat my water using a 24 volt element. I do have PV for the battery bank. Thanks, |

Firstly why you would want to pay the price for a Soma when there are just as good if not better mills on the market at much lesser price. Your 25mm cable is only a problem if it is like 100mtrs @24v. I am guessing that it was put in for an old DC 12V mill , anyway cut in will not be affected as it is current that makes the voltage drop so at cut-in of say 1A@24V over 100Mis only .18V so 10A is 1.18v and so on. Put a suitable sized 3 phase rec at your tower top and well aired, make sure you buy a 100A or bigger even if it is 3 x the size you need. Any wind turbine can be used to heat water with the "right element" you just divert the dump to that, unless you live south Island and cop a howling gale it probably will not make much difference to a large cylinder after the batteries are charged. Do not just hook up the turbine dump to a regular 240V element as a embarrassed customer of mine did, " embarrassed and less a turbine " as it disintegrated from virtually being run unloaded. Why would you not have solar or instant gas for hot water if you are off Grid. Hi, thanks for your answer which is very useful. I bought the second hand Soma as it was $1000 and a new one is $7000. I have disassembled it and it is very well built and in good condition.. A new 1kW generator for the same price would probably be made in China and not last as long. It came with the controller as well. Yes I have an AirX 200w generator at the moment which uses the two 25mm cables. I didn't realize the bigger ones are three phase. As we are not always at the property and it’s remote I decided against solar hot water in case of overheating or freezing. Also when we are heating the water using our wood stove in winter, the solar panels and wind generator can help charge the batteries. We want to keep outgoing costs low so didn't go for gas. I will get a spare rectifier or two and also be able to switch the generator off when we are away. The element I have is a 24 volt three element unit and each element is 2 ohms. I can connect it in various configurations. Cheers, |
