Hi All, It has been a while but I an back. Ok there has been a lot of interest on smart drives. And I am looking at jumping on the wagon. I have seen a lot on F&P . I live in the U,S.A. and I mean no disrespect to all of or good friends down under. Can any one suggest a good smart drive made here that would make a good application for a VAWT. Any help would be great. Thanks guys or gals………

IMHO .... Go with a HAWT and yo will get 3 times more power and 3 times less hassle, but some people with VAWTs just keep persisting so if you want to go down that track then do some research on Blades and how much power you can expect HERE, a single F&P stator is good for about 350W @ 500 ~ 600RPM , so getting a VAWT up to that speed is the problem and where they then try to gear up which causes losses and it then becomes a vicious circle that to compensate for the losses bigger blades are required .
But if you want to experiment with a F&P for a VAWT then I would be using a 60S unmodified ( depending on V Required ), you can twist the poles to reduce the cogging , another would be Glenns 7 phase conversion .

Hi goingbroke,
I don't know what brands of smart drives are available in the States, but here in South Africa, the F & P is not seen every day, but we have an alternative which is the 36-pole LG smart drive. It is very similar to the F & P and and the number of poles are easily dividable by 3 (for 3-phase or 6-phase wiring schemes). Perhaps you have something like that in the States?

Good luck!

You don't have success until you've tried it!
