Hi Glenn, Getting slowly there to build your suggested mill with the laser-cut parts. A few questions, if I may? There are four triangular shapes and my questions relate to them: 1. One has a round hole with a dia. of 25mm, this is the dia. of the shaft but the purpose of this part is unknown as the spline has a dia. of about 22.2? It may be too big. 2. Two triangles and the hub fit the spline and despite the fact, that I needed to press/hammer those parts onto the shaft, there is still a slight wobble in the hub. Does it need more "splined" triangles to make it even more rigid? 3. One triangle has a hole dia. less than the spline dia. I take it this part is stopping the hub from being pushed back. Perhaps the dia. of that part should be slightly less than the dia. of the spline, i.e., about 22mm so it sits snug with the other four parts? I is something like 16mm meaning it is pulling some of the main splined parts off the spline. 4. I can see the hub being stopped from pushing back towards the main bearing, but what is stopping the hub from being pulled off the splined shaft? Is it only the friction of the hub and triangles on the splined shaft? There does not seem to be a mechanical lock in that system. The props want to be pulled off the shaft through the lift. With aircraft we get a lift (fortunately) from the wings and the friction may not be large enough to stop the props from being pulled off. Thanks. Thanks Glenn. I can see now where you are coming from! The PVC/alu prop with its mounting via the 25mm exhaust pipe does not need two 6mm thick hubs but only one, making for a very long setup from 25mm shaft to 12mm end bolt. Your picture fits the Dennis Latham wooden props, where the wooden end of the props is squeezed between the two 3mm hub plates. No problem, I will space the setup and the props will fly closer to the main bearing. The end bolt (12mm Retainer bolt) is my saviour as the PVC prop page does not go into detail how to fit the lot. Did not see it as a metric thread. The 25mm triangle will ensure a centered setup as explained by you. More questions: 1. With the PVC props what would be a good idea to balance them? With the wooden props you are suggesting balancing plates with elongated holes. With the PVC setup this may not be possible as the holes are meant for the U-bolts. 2. The stock standard U-bolts from Bunnings (15-20mm water pipe, Zenith) are 6mm in dia. but your holes in the hub are larger. Do you think those U-bolts are good enough? 3. What is your suggestion for the cable down the mast, a single double insulated cable or three separate single insulated cables? I will be running at the unusual 36V. I found the local bolt shop far cheaper and far better range of nuts and bolts than bunnings. There are only 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't. |

Yes, for 3 x 3 U-bolts but some of them have started to have a minimum price as people annoyed them just buying a few washers. Taxation as a means of achieving prosperity is like a man standing inside a bucket trying to lift himself up. Winston Churchill |
