Hi,

Not my idea, just the interpretation of Michael Lawley's (of ecoinnovation fame) remarks. He may still be selling those F&P-based mills or he may have gone the Chinese way. I cheekily asked him for his secret in building a floating hub, but as expected, he never replied.

The floating hub is a threaded pipe flange and the holes are for two PVC props I played around with. One of two standard F&P bearings can be seen and the hub rides on the 25mm F&P shaft.

The bolt is not the correct one and just shown for illustration purposes. The bolt hits a spring-loaded hinge, which itself is tied to the shaft via grub screws biting into the splines. Should the spring break, then the hinge opens up completely and locks.

In the best case the bolt is 360 deg. away from the hinge and the momentum of the hub (= spinning props) for a complete revolution overcomes the inertia of the shaft, i.e., the gen. I saw instances of the spring being extended and the gen. then turning a bit before coming to rest. The loaded spring may also turn the props back during a lull in readiness for the next hit by the bolt. I do not know if Lawley uses a spring loaded system or not.

Balancing problems with the PVC props and my wife then stopped further research but with a modified Glenn hub (+ extruded PVC props I bought) which I have already laser cut I may just continue, so I shall not keep the forum in suspenders. The modified Glenn hub just features a centre hole for the pipe with the two F&P bearings. I will run into space problems with Glenn's hub as there is less space as the pipe length reduces the length of the horizontal RHS, which holds the shaft bearings.

Feel free to offer a critique; my wife is never backward when it comes to that, so I am used to it.
