My neighbor offered to sell me this windmill (that was never actually connected) with the two (generators?) for $200. Its basically attached to her house but has never been hooked up the gentleman that put it up is no longer there so I can't really ask him questions.

I'm lukewarm interested in this only because my (probably naive) perception of a windmill this size is I'd be lucky to power a coffee pot IF the wind is actually blowing. But I was thinking if $200 was a good deal (is it a good deal?) maybe I could hook it up to batteries or something I'm sorry but I am a total newbie to this.

I think your average coffee pot would chew at least one Kilowatt per hour while it is heating, I would be very happy with that kind of output from a wind turbine.

My first thought is you said neighbour and I look at the photo and all I see is enormous trees. it is going to be hard to find a consistently windy spot with low turbulence unless you are prepared to built a tower 20 foot above the tree tops.

I cant really tell from the photos but they look like servo motors, there is a topic started by piggweed about these a few pages back that may help you.

If the motors are suitable for turbines they may be worth something, but with no wiring, switches, regulator or dump load or grid inverter, I am hard pressed to see any value above scrap metal and parts.

Perhaps you could do some sort of trade or offer some help in exchange for them if you really are keen.
I'm confused, no wait... maybe I'm not...

Ah yes, $200 sounds reasonable.

But then you will probably spend ten times that over the next few years messing about with it, improving it, and building and expanding it into "a system".

It's a bit like buying a very cheap outboard motor when you don't have a boat.
It could either be a golden opportunity, or a momentary attack of pure insanity.

What is the difference between a boat and a wind generator?

At least the name boat gives you a clue as to what you are in for.
