I haven't been here for a while. I'm in the process of buying and moving to a ranch in Texas. There, on the great plain, I'll have all the wind and sun a fella could ask for.

As part of this planned move, I've been thinking about the usual stuff (windmills, etc.) and I came across THIS

I haven't built one yet, but it has a lot of promise to any area where there are strong ground winds (read that the Texas plains) and the need to pump air or water. The bearing loads are minimal and everything can built from off-the-shelf materials. I'll slam one together just to show how it works (at this point I don't really understand it myself) and we'll see how well it will work.

Hey Mac,
That is a cleaver machine! Just shows a person the power of a wing and what you can do with it. The wing in the clip is even larger than the wings on my mill, interesting how it was put together.
It isn't a true VAWT, because it swings back and forth on the horizontal axis, no one said it was...just my view. I should think a proper shaft with bearings would be more robust, but what ever works I guess.
Texas is a very large state, plenty of room for the wind to really get to blowing, good luck to you.

For some reason intuitively don't like the material stresses that this arrangement can deliver.

Just a little update here. The escrow on my little place in Texas closes August 26th, which means I'll be moved in there by about mid September. Once I unpack all the tools and get the backshed up and running, I'll start building and posting again.

Why did I decide to move to Texas? Easy; I can live there for free. The cost of living is completely covered by my retirement and the cost of the move from California will be covered by 4 months' difference in the cost of living between Texas and California. Add to that lots of open space and daily wind of about 12 to 20 miles an hour and a it's the perfect place for a fellow who builds kites, gliders, windmills and so on.

:O)

Edit: I forgot to tell you the best part. I paid cash for the place, so I can still live debt free. Before anybody gets any wild ideas asking me for a loan, I should tell you I bought a two bedroom, one bath house on a little over a quarter acre with a metal barn and open land to the south (where the wind comes from). There are a few trees and that's about it. The whole shebang was $26K! My intention is to continue living in my RV (parked on the property) and rent the house to someonw who needs a cheap place to live out in the countryside.

Very good move Mac, my relatives moved from California to Texas two years ago, when the properties were cheap, due to natural calamities. They also said the life is much cheaper than in California.
