I have an aircraft generator very similar to http://us.ebid.net/for-sale/aircraft-d-c-generator-type-p-mf rs-43879429.htm and was wondering if it would make a decent wind generator?

Hi Curiosity

Nah, it would be pretty hopeless. It looks like a series wound generator, and reading the description, it supplies 28 volts at 5,000 to 10,000 RPM. Thats about 20 times to fast for a wind turbine.

It would, however, make a mean motor for a kids scoota!

spec plate says output 200 amps and rev range 5000 to 10,000 rpm. they make good motor driven chargers for big 24 volt battery banks but need good support bearings and at least a 2 belt pulley.
I'm confused, no wait... maybe I'm not...

I realize a windmill would never spin that fast. I wouldn't be spinning it directly from the blade head. Possibly from a stepped gear or pulley set up to achieve the speed required

A 20:1 gearing ratio is a *very* big ask for that requirement. Personally, I would not bother with bigger than 6: 1 ratios which can just about be done with a single reduction.

Thanks guys. I thought maybe a vawt would do it but 6:1 is a far cry from 20:1
