Aloha every one. This is my first time here.My name is David. My question is, how many coils and how many mags, i will explain. I am living of grid on Mauna loa about 3500 feet up. I dont get alot of sun but i do get wind from all directions and it can be turbulant. It would be nice to generate enough wind power to run a small fridge and tv, at present i run a small 1200 watt gas generator and charge two car batteries and have lights etc. I am about to start my power system and i would like to make sure the vawt. that i am about to build is done with a lot of input from those who have experience building vawts. I may have jumped the gun a little by buying #18 mag wire all ready. I do not intend to buy neo. mags i will be using microwave mags. I am very strong in the mechanics end of things and have most if not all of the tools it will require for the fab. My problem is finding the info that will determine the spacing of mags and coils.I have looked on the net of course and lots of my key words kept leading me here. I have spent hours and hours reading and cant find my answer. I have always had difficulty with complex electrical systems and i dont understand the spacing of the mags and coils. I understand three set of three coils will give me three phase, but i have seen different numbers of magnets and almost no one using ferrite mags. I just need a push in the right direction. If there is a web site that deals with this issue or if any one can help i would greatly appreciate it. I want to add that i dont want to limit my self to a small fridge and a tv, i would like to be able to run a skill saw or such items. I will be buying six or so golf cart batteries to hook up when the time comes. Thank you for reading this, i hope you can help. Aloha Dave |

re # of coils vs magnets look here:coil/ magnet ratios . Its in German but I think you can work it out. Basically the table shows which combinations are good & easy to use. BTW, its not just the coil & magnet ratio that's important, with some combinations the coil winding direction needs to be reversed for some coils as well. Just go for the ratios that are shown in *capital* letters. Coil numbers are always divisible by 3; magnet numbers by 2 which shows you which is which on the table if your German is a little rusty  .Klaus |

Hello David; Welcome to the forum. I designed a vawt the will operate in turbulent winds and will not over spin. Cyclowturbine If you are very strong in the mechanic's then you should be able to build a nice one. Building the magnetic rotor VAWT stator Vertical wind alt-generator. bigislanddave Have a look at your other thread entitled "Mags & Coils" for my initial posting to this thread, which is duplicated there. Maybe Glen can somehow combine this thread and the other one or maybe just add what I said on that thread here to this one and toss the duplicate out, I dunno. No doubt Mac, it was a lot of help and i recommend to any one out there who is starting there firs vawt to find it and read it. Unfortunately it is not at the top of the page and i cant just scroll up to it. I will be getting my questions in order and to the point. I did get a call today and it looks like i am going back to work on Maui Sunday and i wont be able to move on the vawt as quick as i wanted, but i have a lot of research to now any way. Thank you Bob that is impressive and i have watched it a few times on you tube. Thank you Klaus i looked at the site and even though i am half German it all Greek to me but i will study it. If i new how to post a pic on here i would show you the wings i have made from recycling a few things and the coil winder i made today. But here is a question, i want to play a little bit and i have some small wire from a microwave transformer,im guessing it is 30 awg. How many turns would be a good start? I want to just make a small set up to play with using the same type of mags. |

Just a note on the link for (Coil/Magnet Ratios) it can be translated into whatever language you wish using Bing. I just did it and it works great! Just right click on the page after opening the link, a window will pop open, look down about the middle and see (Translate with Bing). don't bother with the other window that will open, just click on the Translate with Bing line. You may or may not have Bing on your PC, if not you will have to go here to http://www.microsofttranslator.com/ place the webpage URL in the box provided and it will translate it for you. It is a great pleasure for me to respond to your query. It is my very first writing in this forum which found in google search. I have been doing things of my own and I have made a creation of my own.
