Just read test results from VAWT here;

http://www.cleanfieldenergy.com/pdfs/2007 VAWT performance testing.pdf

http://www.wind-works.org/articles/small_turbines.html#Small %20Turbine%20Testing

etc..

There has been many attemps to manufacture VAWT, that works ?

I do not want to be killjoy for this, but facts are facts !!

I have 2kw windgenerator HAWT, which has 3,8m (12,5 Ft) dia= 1,9 x 1,9=3,61 X 3,14(pi)n= 11,3 M2 (122,6 sq ft)

If you want the same power from VAWT, you need 2m (6,5 Ft) X 5,65M (18,5 Ft)
to get the same power.

This a law of physics.

Storm protection ?
Etc

I have worked and tested a lot with this VAWT, but found it impossible in many ways.

Forget it, and move on.

Hey! Long time no see; welcome back.

I couldn't get that first link to work and my supposition is it points where to look on the second link. I'll search the other link and try to find what you looked at. Meanwhile, I'd much appreciate your looking into maybe fixing the first link.

Thanks.

Hi All,
I now have a Vawt and a Hawt up next to each other in the back yard.
When we get good steady winds the hawt is making more power than the Vawt, but when the wind becomes gusty and lighter the Vawt does not have the high peaks of the Hawt but its output is a lot more consistant.
In my mind I am still not convinced that one is better than the other in my situation, but given a good location with good steady winds The Hawt would clearly be the choice.
I am waiting to start getting some feed back from vistors and people who live close so far it has been a mixed bag of comments.
I plan on developing both mills as I learn more about them so in time I will have a better idear which is better in a back yard environment.

All the Best Dean.

To; Air Bender

Could you send some pictures and details, or only some measures etc about your VAWT and HAWT ?

Hi Antero,
Both my wind mill builds have been well documented on this forum with lots of pictures. I dont beleive my wind mills will ever produce a lot of power given there location, but the performance of the Vawt is slowly inproving over time, and it can be very frustrating at times but I am learning.
The small hawt has just been added and has been a good goer right from the start.
But I dont beleive I should give up on the Vawt. The first Vawt wings I built are pivoting two element wings modeled on what is being used in the sailing world to sail at 3 times the speed of the wind in very light wind speeds. I have built other wings but these first wings I built have ended up back on the mill. These wings produce more torque than speed but are a full lift set up, and I beleive would work very well geared.
With so many crazy Vawt builders out there and so many different designs It is a bit like the early days of flight with none of the contraptions being built looking much like the modern day airoplane but there was enough of a spark of success to keep people trying new ideas. Most big gains are acheived by peicing together lots of small gains.
For an investment I would go for a hawt, but for an investment I wouldnt be putting one up in my back yard unless I lived on a large area of clear land with good winds.
Be it Vawt or Hawt the urban back yard is not a good spot for a wind mill. And from what I have been reading this is being made worse by people selling wind mills that have been rated and set up to run in above average wind conditions for the average back yard.
So for the hobyist windmill maker out there weather it be Vawt or Hawt keep up the good work and one day we will come up with something suited better to the small urban back yard.

All the best Dean.

You are right.
Thats where we are, with this windpower now..

Let us all know about your test results !

You can see pictures, about my systems and testing;
