Gday,Im new to this site, just woundering if anyone can help? Im thinking of rewireing my 7x2 wired star stator to 5x2 and 1x4 ,its .8 wire,I want to have higher volts in lower wind than what the 7x2 is doing now, without loading the turbine down and increasing startup speed, will this rewire do it?

Hi flc1,
Welcome to the forum! You've had a few hundred showing an interest in your post. There has been a frenzy of activity on the forum lately and sometimes posts can seem overlooked. While I'm not the person to answer your question, this reply will keep it active and give others the opportunity to catch up.At what wind speed do you want the mill to start up? Also, what are you getting out of the 7x2 star gen?Hang in there,Cheers Rastus

Using a staggered stator like this is a good idea. I've used a couple of staggered stator configurations and I swear by them. But yes we need to know the system voltage.

The 1X4C will mean the alternator starts making current at half the RPM it did before, so in light winds the windmill will be making power where before it wasn't. It does however mean you loose come power once you get up into the higher winds, in this case about 10 to 15%. But you will find the gain in low winds, which is what we experience most of the time, will far outweigh the loss in high winds. At the end of the day its all about watt hours, not watts.

Thanks for bumping this up Rastus.

sorry guys ,have been offline for a while , thanks for your replys, its 24 volt system,I ended up going for a 1x8 3x2pole star, seems to do the trick, just trying to sort out a dump load for system, which will eventually be 4x 250-24v solar panels and the smartdrive turbine, would any of you happen to know the max out put of my turbine with that wireing?Im guessing about 700 watts?,,Fred

Hi Fred

Sorry to tell you but a single F&P is only good for around 300 watts. You can tweak them up a big more, but that only applies to certain models, like a 100 series, or fitting neo magnets to the hub.

There are a couple of articles about building dump loads on the Contents page http://www.thebackshed.com/Windmill/Contents.asp#4

Hi Fred,

Personaly I would be going with the 80S and wired in 2X7P for 24V, the 60S are not as good for getting the Amps as the 80S, and the 100S are the best but are becoming rare, but over there in the home of the F&P you might be able to pick up a couple to play with . The best thing is what you are doing and that being, expermenting with different configerations that will best suit your blades and wind regime.

gday Phill,,,,Yea i agree the 80s are better, appears to be less cogging on the 60s though, I have a couple of spare 80s,which I am going to rewire some time in future, thats what I like about useing the f n p, just unplug, undo 4 bolts and you can swap them around in the turbine, simple, just have to convince the mrs that the extra time spent in the shed is for a good cause, yea easy to find the f n p ,just go the dump, I wish blades ,rectifiers n cable etc could be found there too ha
