Hi! I have this project: http://www.scribd.com/doc/67055355/Battery-Charging-Wind-Tur bine And my question is: What can I use for the safety mechanism? I want to use a simple spring furling system but I am having some troubles with the calculation. |

Hi Neil Furling is a a black art and it involves a lot of cut and try. Starting point, generator offset on pivot 3 to 5 percent Tail pivot hing 5 degrees lay back and 8 degrees side angle. A lot depends on the type of blade you use. All the best Bob Foolin Around |

Hi niel, have a look on fieldlines.com there is a topic in the wind section, started by chrisolson called wind turbine transmission, you will probably have to go back to May or june to find it. He has some excellent photos that show the angles you will need to work with to make a spring furler work smoothly and predictably. You may need to credit him as a source in your paper, there are very few others that have openly published their spring furling transmission turbines. I had a quick peek at the project brief, the choice of a bosch car alternator as a power source is very disappointing. there are a number of glaring design flaws. it can not be bootstrapped it needs to consume power to excite the field windings. alternator troubleshooting Despite the tidy graphs supplied the chances that it will fully charge a deep cycle battery without some modification are slim the voltages are not high enough.( I can show you how to solder a diode across the voltage detection earth wire to increase this if you like) the likelihood that a turbine with no electronic braking will survive in a 55 m/s wind are slim, even fully furled a decent set of blades will run away and explode hurricane PMA You could explore the options and point out why something like this would be more suitable in the "real world" edit : although I find the lack of DC current vs RPM data for charging 12,24 and 48 volt banks on their website disturbing cheers I'm confused, no wait... maybe I'm not... |

neilbuster Start here. Once you've ascimilated all this, maybe it'll make more sense and save you some time as you modify what you've already started. Nothing difficult is ever easy!
