Hi Fillm
I like the drive that Bob M has, and in time he will realize that the reality of wind turbines is far from the optimistic, and I did suggest that he shift his sales pitch to the Sale section of the forum, but the development of his testing was morphed into a point of contention with many.
I personally am a bit jealous of his water tower site as I can see a lot of potential for power extraction from the local wind, but it may also cause others to dispute his claims again, that's why he needs to provide a logging type program as Gordon did to fully define the potential of the machine. I am sure that in time he will do that, but it is obvious that he is still on the down side of a steep learning curve.
For one thing he has rekindled my interest in a twin rotor close coupled F&P with neo magnets, if ever I can afford a set of suitable magnets. At the moment I have a bit too much on my plate to take on another project so will await his development to save me a bit of work.
As you know I am really happy with the results from the little 500 watt mills and with a bit of controversial juggling am extracting low end power from them. and will continue to do so with the next one's.
The power output is low but I cannot expect much with the average wind I am getting, but in saying that I am getting 250 to 300 watts at wind speeds below 5 MS so I am as happy as a pig in mud, and to see the alloy blades spinning up and making power in wind that wont even start the conventional blades turning, this gives me immense satisfaction,
I know that you have a thing about not boasting about the 222 blades so I will do it for you. The secret of power is in the blades and their efficiency and its not high speed efficiency that's important, as a fence paling will deliver more power than our type machines will handle once the wind speed is up. The ability of the alloy blades to start in very low winds, gives them the ability to collect power from slight gusts as they are already moving and unstalled, I look at mine spinning around in wind that's hardly moving the leaves on the tree tops with amazement. A set of the alloy blades fitted to BobM machine set up as a HAWT would give him really something to boast about.
Hi Turnymf
I mentioned rock fishing not to denigrate the sport, but as you would know it has the highest fatality rate of all fishing adventures, but then again as my Dad used to say "That Idiots tend to be self eliminating", even the government has little success legislating for common sense, I am also guilty of taking risks while rock fishing when I was young and stupider than I am now, some may say that's debatable though.
All the best

Been following this thread and reading of output claims and counterclaims have come to the conclusion my wind up here hasn`t got the power it appears to have elsewhere. Fillm whilst I`ve commented on this before re.OEM`s output, but 1850w at 20m/s (on a 48v system I assume)that`s 72km/hr doesn`t it ever furl. I have my logging up and running but no where near the stage of posting, plus my OEM`s cannot compete on peak output(and I`ve logged down to 1 secound intervals) although on daily output it`s a different story, so much so that I brake them during sunny days manually and let them rip again late arvo`s(don`t want to cook the batteries) Wonder whether outputting to batteries rather than a grid tied inverter is the reason for the discrepancies in peak output.
Hey Bob I`m on my fifth boat and haven`t paid for the first one with catches yet, but I`m trying again this week.Edited by norcold 2011-10-16 We come from the land downunder.

Hi Vic
Glad to hear you haven't given up on fishing, and even if you never make it pay there is a cost to having fun that justifies it just the same as windmills.
Sounds like you have a serious oversupply of power there so now you will have to look at finding a way to store the excess power and put it to good use, many ideas come to mind but seeing as I don;t have that problem yet I haven't done much about it, except to feed the grid and compress a bit of air.
Outputting to batteries can reduce the power collected as the volts cannot climb with wind speed as it is locked to battery voltage. 10 amps x 27 volts is 270 watts while 10 amps x 50 volts is 500 watts, this is where a MPPT unit makes a improvement.
A capacitive storage unit before the MPPT is a good way to go but caps of large capacity tend to be expensive.
All the best

Bob,
We have a saying amongst fisherman, "the only time a fisherman tells the truth is when he calls another fisherman a liar" , most days my solar setup spends 100-200 minutes floating with it hitting 360minutes on days we aren`t here and fridges etc are just idling. The mills are just toys to me as to most of us but they do give serious power, that I just don`t use and even if I could store, I wouldn`t use but I`m still playing with compressed air and underground storage. Best way around it would be to get Ergon to connect me to the grid than I`d sell it. However the cost for this line I`d have to pay. Ironically Ergon have 1 plus k of high voltage going across my land(freehold) without even an easement. Put there long before I had the land, have communicated nicely to have at least a legal easement but as with all arrogant utilities will have to beat my drum louder before they listen. Think I recall on the Shed a few such battles being mentioned.
Way off subject but hell it needed cooling, a bit of NQ irrelevance.
Mick,Pat etc were solving my power problem but think they had a big dust up with Shaun, now they are all down the pub reconcilling.Edited by norcold 2011-10-17 We come from the land downunder.
