I have been tinkering with turbines for a small time now and am in the planning stage of modifying my FD200W Chinese wind turbine.

Question:
What effect would replacing the standard magnets to Neodymium magnets have on the output of the turbine?

Ultimately I want to modify this turbine for low to medium wind conditions so any suggestions/advice on blade size etc etc would be taken in.

Cheers.

Hi Wallablack

The cost of fitting neo magnets may be more than the exercise is worth, I would suggest you look into the pricing first. If you do upgrade the magnets expect around 50% extra out put with slightly lower start RPM but you will get more cogging, I ran one of these mills for a while with a 72 inch three blade prop, it would exceed 400 watts as is but in winds around 8.5 MS cut in at 4 MS.

The design is for high speed and the only way it is going to work at low speed is with a step up drive and an 8 foot blade set.

All the best

Am assuming FD200W is same as the unit I have. They are rugged little beasts and with a cap-trebler are capable of 300w into a 48v system at around 25km(approx) winds. That is stock standard except for a lengthening of the tail by 350mm, balancing the blades and bending the furling back stop so as the tail is slighly out of square with the prop. This stops them furling to early and helps them track better. As Bob states believe they could achieve more with a 8foot blade set. Check out film`s al blades, they I believe with the cap-trebler will give you low wind performance. Details of the cap multiplier and film`s blades are on the forum. An alternative to the cap multiplier is Bob`s step up drive. Both will do the job, use the search machine in the forum and you`ll find heaps of info to help you.
