Gday,
I live in the suburbs on the coast (we get LOTS of wind).
I really like the VAWT design that you added to your page not to long ago.

Anyway, I'm aming to create a F&P VAWT using the designs from Wind Suff Now. I have all the parts, although I have a few questions relating to the VAWT.

What is the torque of such a machine?
Will it be able to spin a non-decogged rotor?
What about decogged?

I was thinking about the cogging problem... What if a second rotor is offset in between the first. I.E.: As one rotor is aligned with the magnets (cogged) the second is aligned between the magnets (trying to move to the next magnet). Does this eliminate cogging?

What RPM's does it pull?

Could you recomend the size of the VAWT for this project?

Hi Sam, and welcome to the board.

I think the VAWT your talking about is the design by ED of WindStuffNow. If so, wait a couple of weeks. He is taking his design to the local wind tunnel test facility ( would be nice to have a local wind tunnel ). He plans to do a heap of testing and then let everyone know about his results. I want to build a larger VAWT, about 2 meters hign and 2 meters wide, but will wait till I see his results.

Yes you are right about using two F&P's and ofset them to reduce cogging. It works. But its a bit fidley to set it all up, a single F&P windmill is a lot easier to build. I've read it takes 2.85 Nm to move a normal F&P past that first cog. Once its moving the cogging is only small.

Hi
This is my first post and built 2 units. The little one on big stand just free runs, but the bigger one on red stand has 16 mag, 12 coils. Haven't really spun it up yet, but get about 2 volts by hand. The spacing is off and having real problems to find a solution to bearings. Thinking of now 3/4" shaft and just 2 bearing supports at bottom, or should I use top/bottom plates with bearings. And what bearings are the best for a VAWT. Went to auto place and got the real run around as sizes, types, loading etc. Just don't know. Any help please.
note: one in pic is 5/16 shaft and roller bearings

Hi Wayne.

Yeah I think your going to need a bigger shaft. What about some 1 inch gal water pipe?

I've used the 56205 bearing for a few of my windmills and it works well. The bearing comes as 2 parts, the bearing and carrier.

These go together like thus....

A couple of these will hold a 1 inch shaft well enough for your windmill. The VAWTs need a strong shaft if they are not supported at the top.

Where do you get the 56205 bearing?
What is the internal diameter?
