hi guys ive tried other sites and got nothing. basically i got a lg smartdrive washing machine of evilbay that "needs new bearings". i carefully stripped the machine to sell or save everything. the problem is that the drum bearing had collapsed broken up and allowed the rotor to hit the stator which has bent some of the poles by upto 15degrees approx . it also chipped one of the magnets, but that im not worried about. what i want to know is if i straigten the bent poles will this break the laminate in steel laminations that make up the poles, allowing eddy currents and ruining the efficiency? no-one so far can help. when im not paying through the nose for junk im an truck driver so any techy answers need to be in terms a 3 year old dog with learning difficulties could understand. thanks

Hi davyjones

It might be OK. Without looking at it, so long as the coils and magnets are still intact, a few bent poles shouldnt have too much effect on its running. Can you send a picture?

How much are the bearings?

Hi Davey

I have been playing with one of these and had some interesting results.

Might be of some help. slight bending of the pole pieces shouldn't worry it as long as the winding is still OK.

All the best

thanks guys the actual windings look ok, its just the laminate on the steel under the windings im worried about. who thinks its worth trying to straighten this out? my application would be an electric bike which is why im worried about keeping it efficient. thanks

Thats would have made a few noises!

Yeah, you'll have to straighten it out I think. Not a lot of room to get something in there to lever it. Might be worth considering unwinding the bent pole, then straighten it, file any protrusions down, and wind the wire back on.

Ouch
I'd get another one
I think you are on struggle street to get it back to normal so far as the laminations are concerned, they would be surely touching each other magnetically if they aren't cracked and I doubt they would go back to normal once adjusted

I see only three poles affected... I think it will work good enough without them...
@KiwiJohn used less than that for an exercise bike generator. Yours is good up on tower.

OR, you can make one hole through laminates on each pole and fix them with screws, with "sunk head".Edited by vasi 2011-08-20

Hi Vasi
He doesn't have a tower in mind

Hi Daveyjones9
Have a go at fixing it and use it as a mock up or test jig and swap it out later if needs be
How are you thinking of controlling the motor?

Hi Davey

You would be better to buy a ready made bike wheel motor assembly than play around with that, they come ready made with controller for around $200.

That's good because he will end up cutting the stepper. Look for Kiwijohn post regarding to that.

ive done lots of digging around for control methods, the windmill and cnc info on here looks good and ive also been looking at open bldc open source controller site, the whole radio control scene, arduino etc. to be honest im still absorbing as much info as i can. i like the fp motors as the diameter should give good torque and it would have 500watts minimum. the proper leccy bike hub motors 250watt tops. "what we have here, is total disrespect for the law" as someone once said.
also i naively thought i might save some cash doing a diy setup.
i kept all the electrics from the machine and have rewired (old) cars before so id like to think ive got a chance of making it work.
