Hi Barry.

What about the local tip/dump?

I find word of mouth is best, tell all your friends and family not to throw anything electronic out. In the last few weeks I've been give an couple of old computers ( working ), VCR, and a few inkjet and laser printers, plus a couple of electric typewriters. The VCR will be full of goodies, the printers will have stepper motors, and last night I pulled the typewriters apart and each had 3 stepper motors

Not all stepper motors will be suitable for a little wind turbine, you need to try them out to see which work best.

Also its worth weighing up the value of the equipment before you pull it apart. I once trashed a working photocopier, the motors were not very good, and I could have sold it for a few dollars if I didn't pull it apart. Also in the mini-mill article I have a photo of a 5¼ inch drive, but these are starting to get rare and worth saving for their collectors value.

Hi Barry D,
South Aus are leading the country in recycling.I tried to get F&P's from the dump but couldn't due to handling agreements. You may have better results at rural dumps if you are prepared to travel, travel cost can make it uneconomical!Cheers Rastus

Go to a white goods repairer. Tell them you are after f&p motors and most likely they would sell them. May have to be specific so they the repairer have their butts covered if you stuff up.
