Hi everyone.

I wonder if I could get a second (3rd.. 4th) opinion. I'm currently testing out a motor to see it is suitable as a generator. It's single phase AC rated to run at 2800rpm at 240v and 180W. I was thinking that if I could drive this at 150rpm I could about 12v out of it but it turns out I am getting less than one volt in a good stiff breeze. Thats AC or bridge rectified DC.

Am I expecting too much and is this a bad motor, or am I missing something crucial?

Thanks in advance, Simon

i might be wrong on this, but a 2800rpm motor is too fast.
so it will need a hell of a lot of rpm to produce anything.

It sounds like you have an induction motor. These need to be modified before they can be used as a alternator. Do a search for induction motor conversion. The "conversion" consists of machining down the armature and fitting some magnets, and they do work well.

Hello Spow
The 1v your getting is probably just slight residual magnetism in order to get reasonable readings you would need to add mags on the rotor and since its a 2 pole motor wont work has good has lower rpm motors plus by adding mags you introduce cogging and other losses.Been there done that.
Any chance you could find a dc motor such has found in treadmills.
