Hi there! Well, I am totally new here - so I hope I don't sound too newby. I have just received a 42 pole F&P motor with shaft and bearings etc, and want to supplement my caravan solar power set-up with a wind generator. I currently run a 150 watt solar system through a MPPT Regulator (40 volt and 20 amp max) to a 250Ah battery. I have read that the later model hub (which I have ordered) assists with reducing the cogging. I would like to know what in your opinion would be the best set-up for me... ie, 7 Phase 1X6C, 2X3C, 3X2C or 6X1c, or something totally different? I would like 12 volts, and obviously under the max of 20amps - thereabouts. Regards, Smokey. |

Hi Smokey, welcome to the site. First thing we need to know is what you plan to use for your turbine? And that depends on what winds you are expecting. Hi Glen, Firstly, thanks for replying!! :) I believe my stator is a 0.6ml or 60's type. The wiring is 0.6 is what I was told. The answer to the second question is - not really sure. I am thinking a HAWT device, that is, a horizontal device to catch the wind - low profile and portable. As it is going to be part of my caravan set-up I wont really know what sort of winds to expect as it depends on what place I'm at. Suffice to say, it is going to be a back-up when the solar power is not working due to weather conditions etc. So it needs to be de-constructable, and reasonably light weight. I don't know if that is at all workable, but I'm willing to to be directed in the best direction possible. Thanks heaps, Smokey. |

Smokey, I can already see you parking your caravan at cliff & hill tops from now on  . Its unlikely that you can fit an easily demountable mast for your HAWT on your caravan that's also high enough to catch the wind. Most parked caravan's I see do so in the shelter of trees or shrubs and there is little useful wind to catch down there.
Wind is a very fickle power source to harness with a portable device, the only useful way I can think of is a boat where there are usually no trees etc,in the way. Its fun to mess about with wind generators though, so have fun but don't expect too much from it in your caravan situation. Klaus |

Hi Klaus, Thanks for your viewpoint mate. I appreciate how you may see a reduced likelyhood of catching wind in the situation I mentioned, but trust me - where I live, and the places I go, often are windy enough to give the van a good shake. This is partly the reason I have started pursuing this. What I would appreciate is direction in terms of the stator wiring for the power storage I have mentioned. I am not relying on wind power alone for my source, in fact, the solar system I have does a great job. It's just in those situations when the wind is blowing a gale and the sun has disappeared, that I would like to have the wind generator at hand. Cheers, Smokey. |
