hi glen ive just got some blades off of a 200watt chiness w/genny and am going to fit them to a platform of your design, after reading FYI by nzseagull page 2 and his hit the tower i thought i would exstend where the front of the mill to 430mm blades to centre of tower pivet point like the chiness mills to allow for blade flex, would doing this upset anything?i am going to make a joining sleve and put some grub screws to keep the shafts together, what do you think?also checking through the h/brakes kitchen stuff and found a s/less large mixing bowl that was a perfect fit to cover the rotor just needs to be self tappered on for protection, got a new rotor @$77 not cheap!!! thanks

Hi Matt

You can extend the shaft so long as its done right. It needs to run true, no wobble, so you would need a lathe to get a nice fit. 1 mm out of round at the center could be over 100mm at the tips. And remember the further you extend the shaft the weaker it is, especially when the windmill furls. If the shaft does get bent during a fast furl ( like in a storm ), the turbine will quickly shake itself to pieces. This is why I always have my blades as close as possible to the front bearing.

It would be better to extend the shaft and move the front bearing foward as well.

Glenn

hi glen yeah i am going to do the sleve in a lathe at tafe using 50mm round bar and use a 25mm fixed reamer and make the sleve about 200mm long with plenty of grub screws and will be checked for straightness.i will also add 160mm on to the platform so the front bearing takes the load as per your design and will give 350mm clearance between the blades and tower.i could also angle the tower pivet point 1 or 2 degrees as well. thanks
