hello all ive been in the shadows reading reading and more reading on this forum for quite some time.i built a small turbine months ago using an old Whisper 1000 PMA (1987 model) and it worked well.but the winds here are very low 5-10 mph at best.so i added a gear system to spin the genny faster.hung it in the wind yesterday and it took off in 6 MPH wind while hooked to 4 6 volt batteries. it's not real pretty but im still in "build" mode.thanks for the look.Paul

thanks for the welcome Glenn.i do have a question.my blade hub is BIG.would i gain any speed by making a smaller DIA hub.im completely new to all this.i just built this rig from the "gut".

Nah, anything you would gain would be near impossible to measure. I would even be tempted to add a plate to the front, to stop it flexing in wind gusts.

i thought about adding another plate in front to stiffin it.but then i add a spring/adjustable tail hinge which is set @ 35LBS resistance.im thinking it should furl in like 25MPH wind and keep the blades safe from over flexing.

One thing I learned, you cant trust the furling to act quickly enough in wind gusts.

bet that hurt Giz .i'll heed your warning and weld some braces on the hub. my plan is to run my livingroom off the wind...a TV/puter and a few bulbs.i'm wired for 12 volt battery hookup now altho the PMA has wiring options for 12/24/36/48 volt.now i
m wired up thu the 24 volt option charging a 12 volt battery bank. not sure if it's the way to go but it's charging ok. i'm in learning mode with all this...and it sure is fun.:)

I would go with the angle iron for reinforcement like was suggested in the link Gizmo posted.

hello Noel.yes angle is the way to go but my hub to sprocket mounting bolts are in the way.i could saw thru the angle's web some and bend both legs out and around the bolts.leaving the rest of the length in its V shape.
babies breath wind the last few days.the little i did get was turbulent.i gotta get this thing up in some good air and off the container roof but i cant seem to find a free 100'tower...as of yet.altho a fella stopped by the shop the other day and said."out in the country where people had no cable they all had towers with antennas.now with satilite available they going that route and wanna get rid of the towers".he works for the satty system and most ppl give him the tower just to get rid of it.but he's gotta take it down.he's looking for one now for me...we'll see.
also got my charge controller and dump resistor wired up today so im moving forward.:)

update...found a 2000 WATT inverter today at the pawn shop 75 bucks. modified sine wave.i think it will be just fine to run my livingroom unit.:)
