Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I am working on my first F&P unit, which will be a six blade low speed unit. I have been reading up on the rewiring, and started wondering if it would be both practical and possible to wire the unit for 6 phase in stead of the standard 36Pole 2X6C I have searched the forum and haven't found anything specific to 6 vs 3 phase. this is also a very slow project. Any advise, feedback is greatly welcome and appreciated.

Hi Noel

The number of phases you get from an alternator is dependant on the magnets to coil ratio. A factory F&P is a 3 phase machine, governed by its coil(pole) to magnet ratio. There are two types, the older 42 coil 56 magnet types, and the newer 36 coil 48 magnet types. There is a conversion we can do to give 7 phase, by mixing up the parts, using a 48 magnet hub on a 42 pole stator.

You could put an older 56 magnet hub on a newer 36 pole stator and have a 10 phase alternator, but there is nothing to be gained from that.

What I'm trying to say is the number of phases is governed by the coils to magnets ratio. You need to make a change to the numbers of coils/magnets to change the number of phases, it cant be done by rewiring it sorry.

The 2X6C is a good stating point, whats your battery voltage?

I would guess that 6 phases would give you a smaller voltage ouput(same poles, mag, rpm)than 3 phases.
You may lose on having extra diodes and cable

The reason I was asking this was to see if working with a flatter voltage response with 6 phases, would give a slower rise in voltage across a wider range in RPM?
