Hi,
I was wondering if I could get some advice from someone who has build a larger Wind Generator. I have a PaqTorq 50HP 37.3KW @ 640V 3phase PM Servomotor (1750 RPM). I got it surplus locally in the US and thought that it would be great for a wind generator. One problem is that is weighs a lot ~400 lbs. But I was wondering if anyone has used anything like this as a generator, or if there is a better way to hook up such a large Motor to use.

Mainly I am wondering if it is just too big. :) While it is heavy, if I was to use it on the ground with a link to a windmill (or something of the sort), maybe it would be possible. Also what size of blades would be needed to turn something like this?

Motor
Motor2

Here is a link to the manual:

Sorry, if this is answered anywhere else.. as I have searched, but didn't see anything .

Thanks! Edited by Sydnican 2011-04-23

Hi Sydnican.

Hmm. Well, yes, it would work very well as a alternator for a windmill. The problem is, like you say, its just too big. That thing could easily put out 20kW, but would need a turbine 8 to 10 meter diameter ( 30 feet ), not your average back yard sort of project.

So yes, it would work well, but only as part of a large turbine, involving lots of engineering and money.

If you can get enough local interest, it could be done.

You might be able to sell it, and have enough money to buy/build a more practical sized windmill.

Hi Sydnican.

Ah yes, I'm thinking possibly a use for it on a hydro application maybe, any large streams near by?

Yeah I did think to suggest using it in a car, but the weight might be a bit much. 400lbs is like 200kg, thats as heavy as a big 6 or v8. You still need to add batteries. Still, the EV guys might be interested.

Hydro is a good idea.
