Hi guys,

The situation might be a bit different in Australia than in New Zealand but nevertheless I want to ask how have you arected your towers? Say I plan on 20m guyed pipe tower in rural area, but someone told me I need resource+building consents for that ($2000+ if approved) - what is your experience? I guess people just go ahead and build them without permit as long as they have good neighbours?

Thats a bit of a grey area. I'm lucky in that I live in a rural zone, and I can "self assess" any structure I put up. As a rule, I tend to over engineer my windmills and towers, build it heavy and strong. I would rather something that was too heavy than light and weak. And whenever I lower or raise the tower, I make sure no one is anywhere near it, including me ( I use a remote switch on the electric winch ).

In this day and age of no one taking responsibility for their own action, I should have the windmill tower fenced off, and signs to say "If you climb the tower and fall off, you may break something or die".

I believe in residential area's you first need to contact your local council to see if a tower is permitted, get in writting consent from your neighbours, and then get engineering certificates for the design. Its a real nightmare, which is why most people just ask their neighbours first and then just build the thing leaving the council out of the loop.

Glenn,

Thanks for the quick reply. I was digging throuth the documentation and found that for "network utilities" in a rural areas the tower is limited to 20m height. However a building permit is still required...Also just found that a resource consent is only needed if a turbine is 5kW+ - phew. Asked the council to confirm. Now I need to find out about building permits...
Worst case I guess just build it after asking neighbours - luckily they are nice and only one of them has grid power.
