out the dump today and as per normal i called into the dump shop on the way out,as the guy there knows i like solar and wind power he gave me a what i think is a lg 3 phrase 36 pole permenet magnet motor with a tin covered rotor, the windings look to be 1mm thick so what do i have and has anyone wired one for 24volts?they look alot tougher/better than the plastic f and p's we have all learned on and played with

Hi Matt

I have one of these for my next project but will not be wiring for low volts.

They are quite a robust unit and with a extra bearing on the front would be a real work horse. Not real common yet as I have been looking for a second one to make a twin rotor but no luck yet.

All the best

Bob

hi Bob
that looks the same as ive got minus the shaft and bearing ass,so do they have a twin bearing holder like on the F and P has as i didnt get these parts but should be able to get them if required?i'll tell the dump shop boys to keep them for me and you might get that twin up sooner than you think just share your findings with us.are they cog free or do they need the poles twisting/rounding like on the f and p?Edited by mid north Matt 2011-01-18

Hi Guys ,,,

I',ve a couple of these ,, think they will be much better than the F&P ,, all metal , much bigger, heavier shaft and much bigger bearings.

I am tied up with other things at present , but will , one day, get around to playing with a twin LG.. might even try to put Neo's in them ,, I think there is a guy in the states that has a contact in China that will supply Neo's that are curved the same as the LG ceramics... Check back through previous posts, try searching "LG"..

All the best

hi Bruce
wouldnt you have to beef up the the pressed tin rotor to take the extra force neos put on things?i measure the cross section of the poles and the F andP 42 pole is 25x8 [200 square mm] LG 32x14 [448 square mm] so more than double the cross section of the poles and room to wind on some more turns of wire if needed, things are looking good for the build it yourself boys

Hi Matt.

I've considered the possibility of a backplate to strengthen the rotor housing ..

I really like the LG , I think they looked at the f&P and refined some of the weak parts ..

I am busy working on other things at present , but will keep an eye on what others do with this beast..

Hi bruce & matt

When fitting neo's the extra force is distributed evenly around the rotor so it shouldn't need any more strength. I have 150 neos for mine 10 x 10 by 5 thick so it will result in .5 mm extra air gap than original but the magnets are 10 times stronger so that shouldn't worry it.

I am fitting an extra bearing on the front, a twin row bearing out of a front wheel drive car to support the shaft a bit more as the housing is only a bit of tin plate pressed into shape.

Matt the one I have isn't cog free but is a lot less than the than the F&P, with a 12 foot prop on it I am not going to worry about it, if its a bit harder to start that will save the bearings wearing out while it is spinning for nothing.

All the best

OK thanks for that Bob,, When convenient could you let us know of the arrangement of your Neo's and a pic or what type of bearing u might have..

Thanks

hi all
made an abaptor plate to mount the LG stator to a f and p bearing block just gone to bore the centre and leave a lip just like the f&p,than ill make a abour and shaft to suit so i can give it a spin on my 5hp stationary motor test bench which also doubles as a battery charger for when the power goes out.as to wiring the stator i am going to use old appliance cords on each pole in and out for star/delta/staggered pole for a multicombination testing

Hi Bruce and Matt

As soon as the humidity drops off a bit I will have a go at the neo's, I removed the magnets with a heat gun, just warmed up the metal ring and uses a box cutter knife to get under the magnet.

All came out OK, and no damage to the rotor, they are stuck in on what looks like a double sided tape. I will give the metal a light grind before fitting the neo's to get rid of the residue and rough the surface a bit for better adhesion.

I am going to run this one in high voltage mode with the original windings, not sure if star or delta yet. I have three 1000 watt transformers 220 volt to 36 volt also for a trial, can then set the secondaries in star or delta depending on output voltage.

Matt I will be interested to see what voltage you get from yours on your test rig.

All the best

Hi Matt
you could run three sets of charge pump voltage doublers
then stack them for six times the voltage, but it would be dc.
Regards Alasdair.
