No expierence myself, but there is one big advantage VAWTs have over HAWTS. To get more power from a HAWT, you need to go bigger in the diameter, and this reduces RPM. But to get more power from a VAWT you go higher, and this has no effect on RPM. A tall VAWT will need supports evert few feet to keep it all in line, do a google search for vertical windmill's and look for the ones made from 44 gallon drums. I've see examples that are 4 or 5 drums high, and they have a frame work to provide a bearing between each drum. What I'd like to see is a small, cheap VAWT atop every power pole in the country. The pole's already there looking ugly as sin. The means of distribution is right there. Wouldn't that crank out some power? Some turbines look quite good too. See here |
