Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Looks like technology is catching up us Vawt cranks. This ain't built yet but looking at the companies involved I should think due diligence was observed and that it will be built. Its supposed to scale up to 20MW per unit and the advantages over large Hawts should n't have to be spelled out-you just have to look. The cost and aesthetic advantages over Hawts inland should be even more pronounced.

I should imagine they will have to put it on a semi-submerged base in high wave areas but they are building it off the British coast so they must think its pretty rugged in gales and at 3rpm and few moving parts it should have a wonderful reliability and mtbf. Once they get the bugs out , altho with Rolls-Royce there are n't supposed to be bugs.(Well , its hardly rocket science compared to aircraft engines ). It has been windtunnel tested at a 15KW size and you can find video of what looks like a pretty big one running altho I'm not 100% sure its not a very , very good simulation.

Even so this still does n't seem to me the way to go for the ultimate in coupling wind to mechanical (and ultimately electrical ) power. The wind is fast and the machine is slow , giving a huge "slip" to use an induction motor term loosely.Another thing that occurs looking at the solidity and rpm could this thing buck the Betz limit ? Anyway they could surely be interwoven to give a very compact multimegaW wind farm .

Incidentally itsandbits does that knee in the blade remind you of anything ? Surely it can't be.Edited by Big Al 2010-11-07

No,Mac. you have to google Aerogenerator X (there's pages of it ). I'm too busy trying to get two engraving machines running and repairing a 10M shaper for someone in Poland (the only 10M in Poland ) by email (quite difficult - and its a lady who owns it!!) to sit down and learn how to post links. My Grandkids think I'm dead and are getting upset they did n't get an invite to the funeral. Don't worry I'll get there.

Did find time to go to the Renewables UK exhibition in Glasgow yesterday. Thanks to the training this site is affording I managed to have some almost intelligent-- The other guys were intelligent,I think I managed to give the impression I was almost intelligent-conversations with some of the designers. One interesting fact that came from the Proven guys was that the Zeeland tests were practically useless (they did n't have an axe to grind as Proven did n't get involved ) and that Skystream had easily the best siting. I always knew there was something fishy about those results. But will do separate post on this.

Rgds.and sorry to make you work to get info. Won't be much longer before I'm shipping you clickable links.

P.S.Glasgow was split into Big wind and Small wind so it was a pretty interesting day.Edited by Big Al 2010-11-07

sure is a "Sharp" looking unit I must say. Although I would make the struts aerodynamic to contribute to the torque
