Hi everyone,
I have a dual stator 2.9 white pointer 48 volt wind turbine connected to Latronics TC48 controller and PVE1200 grid inverter.

I am trying to find the best staggard windings for the system to use light to heavy winds. the system voltage has to get to 57v before the controller will feed power to the inverter. All values are at 57volt or above for the following.

With
1x 80 14S star
1x 100 14S star in light wind I get under 1 amp heavy winds I get 4 amp.
with
1x 80 7S2P delta
1x 100 14S star in light wind not enough voltage and in high wind I get 9 amp.

I am currently trying
1x 80 split 8s star & 6s star
1x 100 14S star light wind under a amp but waiting or high wind.

Has anyone been through this stage with there 48V system and could suggest the best place to start? Every mill will be different but a starting point would be good.:)

Hi Damo

Its a shame you dont have a couple of 60 series stators.

I would leave the 100 series as it is, it will cut in at high speed to give extra power at high rpm.

The 80 series split into a 1X8C for light winds, and a 1X6C for medium winds, as your testing now, should work pretty well, but the only way to really know is by doing your own tests. You on the right track I think.

You could also try splitting the 80 series into 2X4C and a 1X6C.

I only did some basic testing on the staggered stator idea before I had to pack it all up, but I think there is potential there and more testing is needed.

Let us know how you go. You have a good solid windmill there to play around with.

Thanks Gizmo,
Yes I will keep testing.
I was wondering why the fourm had gone quiet on the subject.
I do have a couple of 60 series stators, but Trev said to take them out as they did not load the turbine up enough. Mind you they were wired up for basic 24 volt and then put in series for my 48volt. The wind turbine was destroyed in a storm the first night it went up. Trev gave life to it again and beefed it up a bit so it could handle the rough weather a bit better. Gees he a good bloke.:)

What did you have in mind for the 60 series?
As long as it stays in one piece I am going to try all kinds of stuff.
I am affraid I can not leave the mill alone I have got the bug

for my very similar setup
I run Gordons cap doubler and the 100S in delta and an 80S split in two ie 2x7C in star.
this provides for excellent loading and i would highly recommend it, mill response is linear from 2.5m/s right through to 8m/s where she peaks at ~700W.

I would have liked more but as Phill and Gordon have prooven time and time again, its all about the range and low end not the handful of days here and there where you're looking for big numbers.

I'm interested in your long term performance, mine makes a solid 1.5KW/hrs a day almost without fail....aside from the breakage!

Interesting Trev's mill broke, looks like even the best of them (Phill included)
have the odd "learning the hard way" experience.

Phill fixed mine no questions asked too even though 40m/s was untested previously.

Repaired item Dad tells me looks more like a battle ship!

just waiting for the brother in laws (both of them) to get it back up -hopefully this weekend.

I'd like to try a 7 phase conversion with the bigger magnet hub found on the very latest F&P's, just tough to set up when its in Melb and I'm in Perth.

Hi Karl, how does the braking of the TC48 handle the cap doubler? zdoes it still work?
Do you remember what values you used and what configuration?
So far I have been disappointed with the power output.
The counter said 113Kwh after a week which I thought was alright Until I looked closer and saw a decimal point! 1.12Kwh.
I shall keep trying different motors. maybe the cap mod if I know where to start.

Hi Crew ,,

" Bigger magnet rotor as found on the latest F&P '"

I'm interested in seeing a photo of this "bigger magnet rotor" .Can anyone help? and if not , maybe you know how much "bigger" these magnets are and how many ?

Thank You ,

20% is the number
http://www.ecoinnovation.co.nz/p-456-high-strength-sd-rotors -type-4.aspx

here is the link to ecoinnovations site.
\caps i used were top of the line 660uF (or pretty close to it) 450V tube amp caps, got them on ebay, you will need 24 of them.

Read Gordons cap doubler thread if you have some time its 40 pages of wisdom and research by lots of forum members.

Short answer is the $100 worth of kit is worth every cent.

Will the brakes still work from the turbine controller?

WARNING YOU HAVE THE WRONG TC48
you should have the one with the dump load option its about $100 dearer.
brakes do not work with F&P's

if you read the manual carefully it tells you this, without the correct controller with dump load

IT WILL FRY.

get onto LATRONICS, send it back , swap it exchange it whatever but do it before you wreck it

Soory Karl , but I can't open that link to the bigger magnets ,,could you explain about them specifically.

If they are much stronger ,then I am interested in retrofitting them ..

Thanks

Hmmm I have been having discussions with Latronics for a week now about the brake not being able to stop the mill to a complete stop. I have been asking about the dump load option and how much.
My manual doesn't not mention anything about the dump load except for the use in a water turbine.
Thanks for confirming my thoughts.
I will keep harassing them until they give in.
What size dump load are you using?
I changed the motors over again to a 80 7S2P delta and a 80 7S2P star.
So far I have only see 4.5Amp but it is producing way more often and I only have had light winds so far.

I am building a massive Miller rotor. Plan to put lots of motors on it and this is why I have been pushing Latronics for the dump load option. The controller as it is would have no hope of controlling it.

must have the dump load option for an F&P not the brake.

for all intensive purposes it is a water wheel!

just go to ecoinnovations site and you'll find it quickly, needs seven phase on the older motors but a 60S apparently can be configured for 48V but I've never tried it.
100S in delta works for the top end for me

I tried evoinnovation ,but just got lost ..

Can anyone throw some light on these " new stronger magnets" please..

Thanks Damo,, I just sent a inquiry off to Michael Lawley of ecoinnovation ..

I read your link ,but it said "horse shoe magnets"" but not other info ..

I've allways said if these rotors were fitted with Neo's the performance would be increased.. my retrofitted rotor worked well ,,as a matter of fact on all windings..

Thanks for your reply..

I received a reply from Michael Lawley in 1 hour ...

These new rotors are 20% more powerful and are $150 NZD.. So ,maybe I'll ask the F&P service center if they have this rotor and how much ...

They look like a bigger version of the original white plastic rotor's magnets ..
