Hi, I'm new,I posted this question in the general chat befor I spotted this one.A long time ago I hooked a 12v car alternater to a lawn mower engien and quickly found out it wouldn't work. I wonder how large of a prop would it take to overcome the Emf of an alternater at speed using a belt or chain drive between it and a large pully or sproket on the prop itself. I also have an idea for a windmill that has only 2 moving parts,I need some one who has a better knowlage of physics than myself to confirm that the thing will work. I will appreceate any info, Thanks! Mr.A. |

This pops up from time to time. Mat has done some work with 24v truck alternators, info here http://www.thebackshed.com/Windmill/Articles/MattLyons.asp. As a rule car alternators are not used for windmills, try a google search for car alternator windmill. The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Thanks' Gizmo, The other idea I have uses Lenz's Law.Basicly it's how those flash lights you shake work. Do you know if it is making a true alternating current? It seems that way to me,but I'm not sure. Mr.A. |

Yeah they would make AC. Any magnet passing through/past a coil generates AC. As the magnet approaches the coil the current in the coil travels in once direction, and as the magnet leaves the coil the current travels in the other direction. Hi, Mr A, Thanks to Glenn, you may now see a pic of a geared car alternator 12v wind gen on this site under the Windmill Kits and parts section, on the Foundry & Fibreglass page. I no longer have this up, but still have the parts, marine grade stainless shaft and alloy bearing housing, brakets etc. If you are interested, I can give you a good deal on these parts. If you have wind speeds better than 5-6 miles per hour, then this works well. Trev @ drivebynature.com |
