Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

LOL, yes from frying pan into the fire!

yesterday it was so easy, just make it bigger i thought......

question mac,

back to the thickness i have to work with for the gap. is it thickness of 1 magnet X's 2 X's .75 or the combination of two magnets X's 2 X's .75?Edited by darlak 2010-08-15

Don't get discouraged. It's not as much 'hard' as it is a bit 'overwhelming'. There's a lot more to it than it looks like on the surface, but start at the beginning and folks here will walk you through the steps.

If anyone should be discouraged, it'd be me and since I'm still hangin' in, you should too. Almost everything I've put together in the way of a wind genny that produces electricity has been a dismal failure; still I persist. I've always built windmills that pump air, but switched off about a year ago to this present addiction! Baby steps -- that's the key to success in this game!

What have you built so far? If nothing yet, that's okay; it'll mean less major boo-boos to overcome.

It appears to me you have already made the magnet wheels. If that's the case, please list the dimensions of your magnets including their thickness; that's very important. From that dimension, we can figure out your air gap and get a test coil wound and you're on your way.

One last point here: This is not a contest to see who can do the best. It's everyone competing with themselves if competing is even the correct word. Everyone here starts in the same place; at or near the bottom. My goals are not yours, but I'll help you wherever I can and if I can't I'll hook you up with someone who can.

Edit

I just realized I missed this:

[Quote=Oops!]question mac,

It's the individual magnets' thickness doubled, then multiplied by 75%.

In my little ax-fx, I have doubled the original 1/4" magnets shown in the picture to make them 1/2" each rotor. Twice 1/2" is 1" and 75% of that number is .75 or 3/4". My air gap is 3/4" for this set of magnets in this arrangement. The picture shows all 1/4" magnets, but I've changed that and also doubled up on the backing plates (rings).

Adding a center wheel creates two air gaps and I haven't would the stators yet, so I don't know what it will do to the power, but I suspect it will be a little less than doubled. I say that because there are always "hidden" compromises in this game. One of those "hidden" compromises is due to the center wheel having only 1/4"-thick magnets. What I'm doing there is basically "cheating" by providing an intermediary magnet-return pathway enabling me to run a dual stator.
