Well that was a great trip, short but eventfull. I managed to visit the Ropatec windmill at Townsville, and the Stanwell windfarm at Windy Hill near Ravenshoe. The winds were only mild at Windy Hill, 5ms, but enough to run the windmills.  
I also spent time in Innisvale, Cairns and Atherton, and visited the local tourist hot spots, national parks and the train ride up to Kuranda and cable car back down to Cairns. All I can say is its a beautifull part of Australia, I can see why its so popular with the international tourists. Innisvale is getting back up on its feet after the cyclone early this year, but the damage is still very visible for 50 km north and south of the center, the trees look like someone ripped all the branches off. All thats left is the trunk, now covered in new growth. I'll write up a story in the next week or two and post heaps of pictures. In your report on the Windy Hill wind farm you stated that in July 2006 that the wind farm generated 162.75 gigawatts of power. The Windy Hill wind farm has a registered generating capacity of 12 mwh. If it was operating at full capacity in July it would generate 12x24x31 or 8,982 mwh or 8.982 gigawatts. How did you arrive at a figure of 162.75 gigawatts for the month? That would be impossible. Wind farms in Australia are operating between 30-35% of their registered capacity. If this was the production rate at Windy Hill it would be of the order of 3.125 gigawatts - a long way short of that stated in your report. It would take over 4 years at that capacity factor for Windy Hill to generate 162.75 gigawatts. |

amortiser I suspect from the figures that Windy Hill had produced 162.75 GW of power since their installation in 2000 (ie 162.75GW BY july 2006, not IN july 2006... look at the figures "It would take over 4 years at that capacity factor for Windy Hill to generate 162.75 gigawatts." built in 2000, by july 2006 (6 years later) it had produced that figure So its slightly under the quoted 30-35% of registered capacity.... |

Yeah Boppa you're right, it was total generated from day one, not for the month. I'll reword that article from "Last month ( July 2006 ) the windfarm generated 162.75 Gigga Watt Hrs of electricity, with a saving of approx 164,500 Tons of CO2 Gas." to "Up to July 2006 the windfarm generated 162.75 Gigga Watt Hrs of electricity, with a saving of approx 164,500 Tons of CO2 Gas." Of more interest is amortiser signed up as a new member to correct ( incorrectly ) a 11 year old article ??!! I joined after looking for information on the operations of the Ravenshoe Wind Farm. This site android.id/energy/wind-energy gives information on wind energy production in Australia in real time. Windy Hill wind farm is listed as an installation in Queensland but it has not shown any power production on its updates since I started looking at in a couple of months ago. I was curious as to why and found this site and this post when I went looking. At a CF of 12mwh this farm since commissioning in August 2000 would have generated 612.08 gigawatts. With total generation for the period since commissioning to when the site was visited at 162.75 gigawatts it has operated at about 26.6% capacity, well below the average for wind farms in the south. |
