greetings,
my name is Paul.i'm a machinist by trade.
is it possible to use an electric window motor (with out the gearbox) for a windmill genny?';2 years ago i built a simple windmill just for looks.now i'd like to make some power with it.
heres a link to my mill under normal wind conditions in southeast Georgia USA.

Hi Paul

Yeah its possible, but even if you get it to work, you'll be very dissapointed with the results.

Most low voltage ( 12v ) dc motors are pretty much useless as wind driven generators. 12v motors used in cars for window winders, wiper motors, fans etc are designed to run at a high rpm. When you try to use them on a windmill, the low rpm means a very low output voltage. You need a motor desiged to run at a high voltage, like a DC permanent magnet treadmill motor. A 110v treadmill motor, designed to run at 2000 rpm, will generate 12v at 200 to 300 rpm.

thanks for replying.
im having a hard time locating a treadmill motor.
i did find (free) a..Fenner Fluid Power DC hydraulic
unit.here is the motor tag info...
1787-AC
12v DC
standard duty
as of yet i havent found any info about the motor.maybe you "windy" fellas can help with that.

by the looks of that mill of yours you'd be pretty hard pressed to get the required RPM.. the capture area is very small..

Here is the link, but for some reason thebackshed puts a 'space' in the word 'current' remove that space and it'll work.

Steve,,that vid was taken in 5 MPH wind..from tip to tip the blades measure 36 inches. heres a vid in 10 MPH wind.

the bearing system are 2 modified (oil filled)pillow/saddle bearings.
when i built it the blade/hub system was Dynamically balanced.that was a few years ago.im sure with no paint
to protect the metal it needs balancing again..that NOT a problem.

being a 6 blade rig it may be a bit heavy.NOT a problem.
i'll remove 3 blades and see what happens..if that a nogo..i'll make some PVC blades.

hello again.been awhile since i visited.i tried several times to make that old blade system spin a treadmill motor...not much luck.then i came across an old Whisper 1000 mill that crashed back in 1987.only thing that survived was the genny...put new bearing in her and it fired right up..got a new set of blades than the vid shows ...3 blade 8.3 feet across.im making power.:)

You can make a like with the

button. It pops up a windows asking for the Script Prompt ( like "Click Here", but I just paste the address in there ), and the address.
