This is a sneak preview of my new ,(hope it works) , timing belt drive. I used a 2:1 gearing and it seems very easy to turn ,hardly any friction at all. ,so I hope when the magnetic rotor goes on it will still be easy to turn. I'm fitting 11 foot "oregon pine" blades to this hub(ford cortina). wish me luck. Bruce Bushboy |

That looks pretty sexy there Bruce. Can I ask where you got the belt and sprockets from? Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Thanks for the thoughts Guys. I got the belt and sprocket, small one from an engineering Co in Sydney a couple of years ago,one of those hard to find second hand joints. But car wreckers places will get the same stuff-the belts being much larger,so you'll have to buy a shorter one from "blackwoods" or "bearing services" Etc.-around 30 dollars. I'll get stuck into finishing off the blades now that I have the "test" pole up for balancing,Etc. Hoping to get good results from 3 years of finishing off these bloody monsters-takes me ages to get things finished, with a big property ,I have hundreds of things to do . Anyone living around Brisbane or the south-east area is welcome to come on over and have a chat, plenty of stuff to look at.- call me on (07)55453513. Bruce Bushboy |

Hello... brucedownunder2 I have been contemplating of using step up gearing with belts as well. When I found your beauty while searching. If you could enlighten me as to how it all turned out. I realize this post is 4 years after the fact. but motorcycles, cars all have cam gears these days.. Just wondered if worthy of checking... Thanks, Chuck Freedom allows us a lot "Please don't abuse." |

Yes, I still think that was a good idea and it worked well til it must have become a little loose and in a storm it must have been producing so much power it jumped a few cogs in one of the gears and from there on stripped the rubber and fibre webbing from the belt ... Just looked up my diary from 22-7-08. 845 watts in to a 48v battery bank with 100 S stator and a retrofitted Neo magnet rotor. They were the ABS pipe blades that Phill and I made back then ,,since broken in a huge storm . as Tony says ,,sh*t happens,, but nowdays ,I'm sort of into bigger commercial machines like my Exmork.. I must say I always liked this puppy too and Bruce never took it to the nth degree, dual stator, low voltage, cap doublers. reduction drive = high speed thinking with the right amount of persistance could have got almost 2KW out of such a config. Luck favours the well prepared |

Thanks for the great information on this site. I finally got my turbine up 3 weeks ago. I got the wind I was looking for last week-end. Just more than expected. 85 mph at our air port,"I had well over 50 behind prop on air speed indicator". 118 mph west 35 miles closer to mountain front. quite a Gail to see if my machine furled properly. well I do have a bit of Irish blood.. It furled between 25 mph and 30 mph. A relief. I guess the 2" .188 wall, square tubing did its job. After reading Bruce's older post about gearing and belt drive I came across a reference to this site. for calculating ratios. wanted to share. www.csgnetwork.com Cheers, Chuck Freedom allows us a lot "Please don't abuse." |
