Hi guys,

So happy to find a forum I can discuss this stuff, my wife is going a bit mad with me discussing it constantly!

My latest intense interest is wind power.  I’m in the process of building a VAWT and put the call out in our community for anyone throwing out an old direct drive washing machine.  Half an hour later I was pulling apart an LG one for all the electrical goodness inside :)

I’ve read a couple of articles (including on The Back Shed) about how I can decog this thing and possibly rewire it, but what I struggled to find was which method is best.

I like the twisting idea because it sounds like the least likely way to do irreversible damage, but maybe I’m misjudging this?

My aim is to charge a small bank of old 12v car batteries I’ve collected and wired in parallel.  I then plan to use this in conjunction with an inverter for some things, and a DC step up board to attempt charging my electric motorbike.

I’ve bought myself a cheapy hybrid wind solar controller too.

I’m posting some pictures of the Direct Drive motor, but let me know if there’s more information I can provide that can’t be found in the images.

From what I can tell, the three phases are shorting in a single location, so I think this means it’s already wired in star configuration?  Which I believe is helpful for low wind speeds?

Ready to learn here, but please note I don’t have any kind of degrees in electronics, so am learning on the go here :)

I figured I’d do a quick go through some old topics that seem related to this motor (36 pole thingy:)

This one from 2017 seems to suggest that rewiring may not be needed and to test it in place.  But there wasn’t much discussion on decogging.

In 2018, there was some brief discussion on the topic of delta configurations which included an example that seems to have a DIY regulator:

As my hybrid controller has 3 inputs for the wind turbine, I’m making the assumption that it will be handling regulation itself, so I will not need to go tracking down diodes and capacitors etc for that :)

2017, there seems to be someone by the name of @DaveP68 who is a real advocate for my 36 pole stator.  I wonder if he’d be available to chat here in our dystopian future =D

2011 saw this post about a 36 pole stator LG motor, but it also seems to mention 48 magnets in the rotor.  Mine only has 12 by the looks of things, so I’m not sure how relevant this information would be for me.

Okay, I’m realising my mistake there.  I see the magnet blocks each have 3 magnets in them.  So 12x3 gives me 36 magnets, matching my 36 poles.  Not sure if it’d be safe for me to put iron filings on them to see if they’re the “arrow shape” ones.

The stator you have is wound with Alu. wire so it will be more difficult to rewire than a copper F&P, But I have done it. I used crimp caps with nal-ox ( anti-corrosion paste used with aluminum ac connections) So it will work but never give the output of a copper stator due to higher resistance of the alu.
