Hi everyone,

Im making a hub at the moment to fit 3 x ldpe blades approx 500mm long.

Having cut the first 10mm thick plate into a circle (for welding to shaft), Im wondering whether there would be any probs if I DONT make the other 10mm plate round and just left it square...for obvious reasons :)

the blade mounts are 4mm, which will have the 10mm plate as shown welded to it.

and will bolt to the circular 10mm plate.

any problems / suggestions?

Hi Adam.

Nah there is no reason you couldn't leave it square. It would have no effect on balance, and little effect on wind resistance. And it would save you a lot of work cutting another circle. Its only cosmetic, so go for it.

I had convinced myself it would be fine as it was still symmetrical, but just thought Id check :)

While Im here :P

can anyone please give me some advice with regard to constructing / mounting using the f+p bearing holder?

ive got wat i think is a decent plan, using angle iron frame and securing to holder with screws but.....

ecoinn sell these holders so Im hoping someone might have a pre-engineered design I could copy :D

Hi Adam.

Have you seen the design I describe on the web site http://localhost/Windmill/fp2a.asp. Its a bit more involved, but you can make it in a afternoon and its proving to be reliable.

Another option would be a short length of 100mm box section. Drill a few holes in the side of the steel box and screw in self tapping screws to secure the plastic bearing holder.

Hmm, hadnt though about getting some 100mm box....

but yes, screwing to the centre section seems the way.

yes, I have been using those instructions for everything else! :)
they're excellent thanks!

figured Id have a go using the std holder instead (dont have any 65mm box :p )

and tryin to re-use as many of the washing machine parts as possible :)

ended up using 4 bits of 40mm angle (2 bits shaved to 35mm)
