I visited my Melbourne Altronics store yesterday to buy a component and on the counter were copies of May Silicon Chip. I was surprised that available so early. Likely those with subscriptions will also be receiving. I have read Geoffs great article, 11 pages and a splash on the cover, obviously number 1 of a series. Silicon Chip has a "Micromite 28-Pin Chip Manual V4.5" and 28 pin software available on their web site.

Geoff, were you hoping for another week? Damn the pressure!
Your Micromite site might now say something about the Micromite, if only "Coming soon".

Great news - can't wait to get my copy of SC. Here in NZ, they are normally the week before the new month, so May's issue should be at Jaycar NZ by 28th of April or so.

11 pages is a very good coverage of the device - wow!

All,

Is anyone subscribed to the online edition of SC magazine? If so, do you have access yet to May's edition?

If the answers to both of the above is 'yes' then do you think that if I subscribe now to the online edition for 6months then would I have immediate access to the MicroMite article?

Please help me (and others) here in UK get access to this much anticipated article.

Thanks for any help from your side of the planet . . . .

Only files for the 28 pin version. The readme file has this link http://geoffg.net/micromite.html which is not known yet.

Check out the SC FAQ here:

FAQ

Basically, as I understand things, if you subscribe to the online version this month, then you will have the six-months to the end of September 2014. The on-line versions are available from the 1st of each month, so says the FAQ.

Please note that you CANNOT download the online version as a PDF or any other file, and printing is limited too. This is to prevent piracy and uncontrolled distribution in electronic form, of their magazine, and I have to agree with their reasons, to be honest.....

EDIT: I am happy to buy printed copies here, and mail them to anyone outside of New Zealand and Australia, who may want a printed copy. Payment would be by PayPal, for value of magazine and postage.(no mark-up)

Prices would vary depending on destination. Anyone interested, please flick me a PM.

are the files here final?
http://www.siliconchip.com.au/Shop/6

there are still diagrams with missing writing and the page 7 screenshot of teraterm displays the text "Beta 1". but i do see that most references to the 44-pin QFP variant have been removed - though the line "The Micromite firmware will run on all variants of the PIC32MX150F128 and PIC32MX250F128 microcontroller which come in 28 pin and 44 pin packages" is still present on page 4.

i've loaded up the firmware, and it no longer says 'beta'.

Beta Testers are privileged without the Silicon Chip. The disclosure in the article, and software and Manual on the Silicon Chip software site (which is readily found), covered the 28 pin version. Teasers towards the 44 pin chip to be detailed in the next issue. I think that the exposure in Silicon Chip is to the benefit of us all. If Geoff or others reveal more, the Editor will lose interest in publishing Geoff’s articles. His articles undoubtedly give him more incentive to continue his developments and must dramatically help to expand the ‘Mite community.

Tempting to help, but interested people can contact Australians to obtain S.C. copies or take out subscriptions until Geoff may tell more.

Geoff may not be able to update the Silicon Chip site due to the Easter break.

Yes, the magazine did hit the streets early. For some reason it takes a long time to reach Western Australia so I will probably not see it for another week or two.

The Micromite articles will come in four parts. Part 1 (on sale now) is an introduction based on the 28-pin chip. It also describes a GPS controlled digital clock based on the Micromite - the aim is to show how easy it is to use the Micromite for a complex job.

Part 2 (next month) will cover how to use the Micromite and how to use the IR remote control, LCD, servos, etc. It is essentially the same text as that in the Micromite Manual - so nothing new there for the beta testers.

Part 3 (probably in July) will be the VT100 compatible ASCII Video Terminal.

Part 4 (in July or August) will be a short article covering the 44-pin version of the Micromite and featuring White Wizzard's 44-pin TQFP module.

My web page on the Micromite (geoffg.net/micromite.html) is now up there and you can go there to download the final version of the firmware and the user manual for both the 28-pin and 44-pin versions. For anyone who is wondering - the final version is almost the same as Beta 18 (just a few tweaks).

I was in a bit of a quandary over what to do with the 44-pin version - should I wait for the magazine article in July or August before I released it? That seem a bit silly so both are on my website. But I would be grateful if you would not talk to the magazine about the 44-pin version until the fourth article actually hits the streets. I know that it cannot be kept a secret but I would prefer to not annoy them too much.

For people overseas - you should be able to buy copies of the May issue of Silicon Chip from futurlec.com in a couple of weeks. Also, electronic access will be available from the 1st May.

11 Days would be optimistic,

One of the reasons I dropped my subscription, besides the cost, to the online version of SC was it was Soooooo late.. Nearly a full month AFTER the print edition. It will probably mid May before it will be up..

Regards,

Mick
