Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi all. How hot is too hot? When idle, the PIC32 is about 27'c When I feed it processor intensive tasks at 100% duty-cycle, the heat rises to about 50'c at the plastic case of the IC. That's pretty hot, and is hot to the touch.(the chip is) Heat is a killer of electronics, so is that still normal? Perhaps one of those little stick-on heatsinks would be a good idea... Perhaps I am over-reacting? When I run something like COLOUR-1.BAS for several minutes, I discover that the IC heat is about the same at roughly 40'c This time I used a laser thermometer, last time I used my finger. I might be wrong on this one - fingers have thermal lag... EDIT: Bloody Vodka is screwing with my ability to be logical tonight. You can probably ignore this thread.... Smoke makes things work. There is no difference between the processor waiting for input and actually doing something. It keeps running at the same speed and drawing the same power and therefore generating the same amount of heat. Normally the PIC32 runs a little warm but definitely not burning hot. You can make it run a bit hotter if you are sinking or sourcing a lot of current through the I/O pins. Watch out for that Vodka... Geoff Geoff Graham - http://geoffg.net |
