Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Been frustrated with my mobile carrier trying to explain my poor coverage. I wanted to know location of all of the Telstra / Optus / Voda base stations near me. I Found the following interesting link where you can search be address. Zoom into the tower and every licenced antenna on that tower is described by frequency but not whether it is 2G or 3G.
Much better that carriers coverage maps are only a rough guide at best.

http://maps.spench.net/rf/#pos=-31.9098716,115.8711526&zoom= 17&type=hybrid&auto_fetch=true&clustering=true&cluster_level =17&filter=[{%22client_name%22%3A%22vodafone%22}%2C{%22client_name%22%3A%22hutchison%22}]&q=c%20vodafone%2C%20c%20hutchison&tiles=[{%22t%22%3A%22u%2Fblack%22%2C%22v%22%3Afalse}%2C{%22t%22%3A%22s%2Fall%22%2C%22v%22%3Afalse}%2C{%22t%22%3A%22s%2Fmobile-vodafone%22%2C%22v%22%3Afalse}%2C{%22t%22%3A%22s%2Fmobile-vodafone-new%22%2C%22v%22%3Afalse}]

Have yet to find a way to specifically translate the LAC / Cell ID to what tower my phone is currently connected to.

Also look at the host link www.spench.net for a lot of orther interesting technical info.

Enjoy

I heard a rumour that the big T has been upgrading the base stations from 3G to 4G, restricting the availability of the 3G and frustrating existing users with the lack of coverage. (One way to force existing 3G users onto new contracts with 4G)

I got sick of the other major telco and got my 2 year contract abolished due to non coverage. After looking at the whingepool forum I found that Kogan use the telsux 3G network and 3G will be around for a long time to come. Anyway I ported my mobile number over and for a cost of $79 for 3 months and unlimited calls and SMS with 6 gig of data a month. Now for 12 months it is $299 and try and get that price for unlimited off a major telco...... (in ya dreams).

I found with 3G I get service in my house where before I had to leave my phone outside in the hope it got a signal and with working around Adelaide no more dropouts on calls.

Cheers Bryan
