Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I'm starting a separate thread about this.
It is an offshoot of thread (MM) D/A converter

I'm wondering if it might be useful to start a thread on this subject. Someone might have already started one but it might have disappeared into the ether if people don't keep adding to it and keeping it active.

I was thinking the same thing Trevor. This info re binary manipulation, MSB/LSB transmitting and file reading is very good info for we "ordinary" folk Unfortunately it'll be difficult to find later under a thread on D/A converters!

Maybe Glenn could put it in a separate thread under "SPI bit transmission & file reading" or some such. A good start point would be your post (Talbit) just after 4pm on the 16th Jan. I've already copied James' little swapping program/info into a folder I keep for useful MMBasic stuff.

I agree with the idea. You don't need Glenn to solve it though. There's nothing stopping you cutting and pasting the relevant information into a single post and starting a new thread with an appropriate title. Even better, as new threads expand on the subject people could update/improve the summary.

If you do, I'd suggest that you preface the thread's title with SUMMARY: so that users can use the search facility and only search for the threads with SUMMARY in the title. The default is to search for the keywords in the message body, so a search for SUMMARY would find this posting.

Just a thought.

James

Gizmo said   Some sort of index is needed. The forum does have search facilities, but you got to know what your searching for. But an index of topics, like A-D conversion, File handling, etc, and under each topic a few links to relevant posts.

If someone were to put together and manage the index, I would be happy to put it on the forum as a sticky, so its always at the top.

(typo corrected)

Glenn

Glenn,

You're suggesting a single person take on the creation and later modification of the sticky. That would work well with the current forum setup. However, if someone replies to the sticky the 'sticky manager' would not be able to modify the original post at the top of the thread any more. Can the sticky thread be locked so that no-one except the 'sticky manager' can edit the post?

Alternately, can the sticky thread be configured so that no replies can be made, and anyone can edit the single posting in the thread?

The sticky would be locked, so only I can change it. Whoever was responsible for the index would sent it to me, and I would update the sticky.

Yeah a Wiki is a good idea too, but I dont have much experience with them so cant really make any suggestions or comments. I could add a link to the wiki though.

I will throw in my ten cents worth
I can host a wiki no problems, but would need assistance with the content / admin
Possible urls

32bit.com.au
Microcontrollers.net.au
Maximite.com.au
Duinomite.com.au
Fleximite.com.au

MMbasic.com.au

I like your way Glenn - a wiki seems like overkill a bit and the forum works pretty well for most things. A wiki would fragment where members access things somewhat and that's probably not a good move. Also I'd guess a lot of members wouldn't know how to use them (like me).

I don't think the sticky post would need an index and it's likely that as the number of "summary" threads increased it might get pretty big. If it was just an instruction to search for "summary" on the thread titles, and subsequently to do a keyword search on any likely looking summary threads that are thrown up by the first search, I think it would work. Regular forum members would quickly spot the "summary" thread of the subject they were looking for and less regular members should still be able to find things.

There'd be pretty minimal load on you this way. You'd edit the sticky occasionally and that should only be necessary if we felt the suggested keywords for the "second" search (i.e. the text of summary threads) needed updating. People can add "summary" threads whenever they like without needing you to get involved.

I can see benefits in both. The path of least resistance is to go with the sticky / SUMMARY idea and see if it works. If it doesn't, a wiki looks good.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on how they'd like to see it done?

For the particular problem which was found, anyone could have posted a separate thread (as was mentioned) with a link to the D/A one. Wouldn't that be enough?

There isn't THAT much traffic here...

That would work when searching the titles with a keyword but would only give a link to one thread with some appropriate info - unless someone else has started another thread with similar title keywords and put other links in that.

If the double Summary/Search method is used, the "Summary" thread becomes a likely thread that members would post to with info/tutes/code on a particular subject. When info appropriate to that summary thread comes up in another thread, links can be posted (by anybody) in the summary thread. The "Summary" thread then becomes a cross-referencing area to other relevant threads. This also means that all those links don't have to be in the "sticky" post taking up screen space at the top of every page.

James,

How do you put multiple quotes into a post. Every time I try this by going back to the forum and hitting the next quote I want, I lose the other one.

Easy. I have TBS open in two windows. One has the "Post Reply" box and the other has the messages I want to quote.

Terms between quotes are significant to the forum software, but the don't affect the display if I put in a space after the leading [. So where you see me saying [ QUOTE] I really mean you have to use that but with the space removed.

I put [ QUOTE=username], paste in the quote I want, then finish with a [ /QUOTE]

I do the same for each quote I want. It could be quite useful is a Summary posting :)

Hmmm... almost devious - I'm gonna have to pick up my act!
Using it for the Summary postings is what I had in mind, just couldn't figure how it was done.

Another thing I've found which will make the Summary/double-search method a bit messier is that the search function doesn't hold a hit-list after you jump to one of its hits. Consequently if the thread you jump to is not the right one you have to re-do the Summary search and jump again - etc. It would be better if you could return to the first search's hit-list.

Glenn might be able to change how this works but if not it does defeat the utility of it a bit. Still, there will be plenty of cases where the first hit chosen is the right one so I think it's still a worthwhile method.

Greg

EDIT: Maybe your "two winows open" technique would fix this?

Just use the browser Back button to get back to the Summary.

Further to the above, open each item in the hit list in a new browser tab. I don't know about other mouses and browsers ( I have IE9 & 10 and Logitech mice) but I can single click a link with my middle button to open it in a new tab. If the link is unproductive, just close the tab and you are back at the hit list.

A right click on a link will also allow this action + you can also select Open in a New Window if that is a better option. I know that there are a few different browsers out there but they seem to all mirror each other in the basic actions. My 2 cents worth.

Yep, dead right gents - I should have been a programmer and not a metallurgist and then I guess those options would have been obvious However as you can see from this post I'm learning!
