Spitfire Fighter Planes to be Dug Up in Burma

This hasn't got a lot to do with Microcontroller projects, but knowing the average age, and interests of the TBS members, I am sure it will make for fascinating reading.

Don, Just as another aside when I was working in the Maralinga area in the 1980's I recall seeing a photo of similar air craft and various British army vehicles being buried in that area. I wonder if any one would like to dig up those?

I certainly could believe they were buried.

Also the Americans scrapped heaps of surplus gear when the war ended. Pushed perfectly good aircraft overboard from carriers, before sailing home.

At Nightcliff in Darwin, they dumped a heap of tanks, trucks, etc, over the cliff into the sea. Still visible today at low tide.

There are heaps of stories about the dumping and "squirreling away" of military gear at WW2 sites all over Australia. At Oakey QLD there are stories of Spitfires being dismantled and put into abandoned coal mines along with whole V12 Merlin engines, still in their packing crates, as the the boys couldn't bear to see them sold as scrap.

No one has yet to find them though, publicly that is, and there have been lots of attempts!

haha!

Years ago I saw one in action on TV and have long wished it still existed (*) (updated, I suppose) and that every economist, government minister and senior civil servant were forced to see the outcome of their proposed messing with the economy (any members of the public who wished should also be given access).

Well-intentioned meddling = disaster, nearly always :(

Tony Blair et al left us a nightmare and wars that weren't wanted.
