Check out this new PIC32MX1 Arduino/chipKIT style board.
It's on a Kickstarter campaign.
I like the DIP package.

It looks very good. Does anyone have comments on the Arduino library porting for this new device. I noticed it had an Webserver ethernet project open in the IDE.

This platform would be even better if MM Basic could be squeezed into the DIL version of the PIC 32 by leaving out the microcomputer features (graphics and keyboard etc). I'm certain that a 32-bit microcomputer running MM Basic Lite would be popular for many embedded applications.

Not bad...Bit worried about that capacitor next to the pic32 though...
looks like an ordinary electrolytic where a 10 uF metallised/ceramic
should be (?). It is changed in other photos (to a tag tantalum ?)
BTW the 28-pin pic32's run at half the speed, so I'd expect a speed hit.
Nifty though.

Is there a schematic Chuck?
Just trying to work out the function of the second I.C.

Perhaps I missed the obvious.

That's what I thought it was too David, but we are talking about a DIP version PIC32. Does this mean it doesn't have USB on board in the cut down version?

Or perhaps it provides additional I/O for the Arduino platform that the DIP version can't provide in the current format?

I could, but I won't.

I thought the whole advantage/reason of the dip version was for ease of hobbyist designed projects without SMD and double sided/multi-layer PCBS (I.E. Easy & In-Expensive)

$34K USD Buys a WHOLE lot of Color Maximite/Duinomite and similar Boards with Arduino Shield & MMBasic Support (plus all those nice extras like VGA/Sound/Kybd etc.).Edited by djuqa 2012-10-07

I feel if it is all about construction simplicity, then it should really be a BM type USB connector, not a mini-USB surface mount. This was the first thing I noticed when I looked at the pictures.

I'll bet older, poor sighted, kit builders (like many of us) will find this a wee bit of a problem.

No DON; the Ultimate Construction simplicity is
Buy Colormax / colour maximite / duinomite.
I really do not see any advantage for this project over the many existing PIC32 projects / boards already available/announced.

None that I could find.
The second PIC is for the USB to Serial that the FTDI chip performs on the chipKIT board.
The PIC32MX1 doesn't have onboard USB but the PIC32MX2 does have USB on board so that would have made the design simpler. Maybe that's a next generation?

I agree Don. It was one of the first things I noticed as well. Everything else is leaded, why not the connector.

I could read the part number on the chip as PIC16F1455. This is one of the new USB parts that don't need an external crystal to run USB. It's called clock recovery.

PIC16F1455 feature:
Universal Serial Bus 2.0 Module with clock recovery from USB host.
So I'm sure it's doing the FTDI function.

It's funny how we've all concluded the same things about this.
When I first saw it I had the same thoughts.

Why not use PIC32MX2 with USB on board?
How does he get low ESR leaded part?
(I can't find a leaded part with low enough ESR, neither could Geoff last time I asked him)
Wish it could run MMBasic.
$34k seems like a lofty goal but I have seen some Arduino surface mount modules get $70k+ for a repacked Arduino in a smaller footprint. So you never know about this Arduino community.

I thought the same thing when the PIC32 DIP parts were released but even before that I produced a few prototypes that I called the Maximino based on the original Maximite to see if there might be interest in this type of module for MMBASIC, but I couldn't get much interest in the thing. I even made a plugin shield for the keyboard, VGA and SD card.
Maybe someday I'll just open source it and let people smarter than me figure it out. It's also where I learned that the Vcap needs to be surface mount to get the required low ESR. Frankly, I hate surface mount for my projects. I'm still old school and prefer leaded everything.

I am guessing here but - the xillatron first photo
seems to have an leaded electrolytic capacitor, and the further
photo seems to have a leaded tag tantalum capacitor instead.
I get the impression they are not the low ESR usually needed ??

The dspic33f at 40 mips certainly need the low esr. Microchip boards
tends to use small format 0805 Murata / Panasonic smd ceramics, I
have settled on the larger size 1206 equivalent which are much easier
to handle,

Murata GRM31CR71A106KA01L

I tried soldering leads onto large kemet tantalum-chip capacitors
and it worked ok, but it was way too fiddly and looked like a
Salvador Dali existentialist installation - maybe there's
money in it yet

chronic also just pointed out to me that the mini-usb used could be a through hole type. I checked and you can see the pads on the solder side of the board artwork, so they are through hole.

I'll almost bet these won't be easy to get for many users, and the standard BM should have been used. After all, the profile is lower in height than the DC connector.

I looked back at his board layout and see that you are right, it is leaded.
I learn something from you guys everyday.
I never knew a leaded version of that mini USB connector existed.
This is great.
Digikey doesn't list any but Mouser has one that they list as a new product.
Details at the link below.
Great catch guys.
I have several designs this can be used in.
