Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi Andrew. At what range, does your friend want to know the ground conditions. If it is for landing, then a wind sock is best. It gives you wind direction and wind speed. If it needs to be a long range, then that could be fun. Some form of a long range weather station. It could be done. Kevin. There's no such thing as a free lunch. |

Speaking as a pilot myself, I would be very careful with a project like that. Amateur meteorology for fun is one thing, but using it to determine such things as landing direction, or other critical decisions for a light aircraft is a whole different thing. I can only imagine what the CAA would do if an incident or worse an accident occurred and the pilots decisions were influenced by a home brew non approved non licensed weather station, regardless of how right or wrong it was at the time. And although you might say that it is only for reference and not to be relied on, it doesnt work that way. If a pilot has to start questioning or double checking information that is being fed into a decision at a critical flight phase such as approach or landing, it increases the work load significantly, and the focus shifts from the primary task ( landing the plane) to trying to figure out what information is good and what is not. Everything aviation is very strictly controlled, and for good reason, even simple items such as a wind sock is calibrated. My advice would be to leave it to the professionals. Very few know the definition of a 'great landing.' It's one after which you can use the airplane another time. Don... https://www.dontronics.com |
