I was wandering through an electronics store and explaining to my youngest son my new computer. My youngest is regarded an expert at computers mainly because he has the twitch factor of a rabbit in heat and none of the other kids can get near him in a console game. His opinion...a flexible keyboard would be sick with the Duinomite. To be honest I would secretly like one anyway so I found one which advertises PS2 compatibility but like all of them is USB. I was wondering if I used one of those off-purple adapters to operate the keyboard(green is for mice) and if I have a failure, I fit a Picaxe or 16f628 as a keyboard wedge to get the keyboard to work. Any opinions or a starting point ??? (sorry can't disown youngest son..too much paperwork) |

yes get an adaptor try a computer shop or jaycar/altronics ..some body will have one..try the green adaptor it may work not shure how they are wired thoug ..at worst it wont work.... technicians do it with least resistance |

The important thing to understand is when it comes to mice and keyboards, USB and PS/2 are completely different protocols. The little wiring adapters, will only work with a device that can speak both protocols, and detects what it is plugged into. So in short the adapter is only adapting the wiring, the device still needs to be smart enough to detect the right connection, and talk the appropriate protocol. I ruined a working keyboard trying to do something similar (using one of those cheap adaptors) a couple of years ago so proceed with care! John |

Read: http://www.themaximitecomputer.com/maximite-control/ The little adapters are made up of two wires. I smashed one open, and I think I posted a picture on the forum, but too many messages to find now. What Rohan says is correct, some keyboards may work, some won't. I could never get a wireless keyboard to work via usb, then through the adapter. But sooner or later, I know we will have a sick keyboard. Another point to note: Eventually PS2 keyboards will become impossible to get, and someone will get the sick version working. Perhaps USB-OTG, or a USB driver on the keyboard pins. The adapters don't plug in because the VGA connector is too close to the keyboard connector, as the adapter has a wide side and a narrow side. The wide side and the way they plug in means it can't be fitted without an extension cable. So we moved these connectors apart on the DM-Mega, and DM. The mini has the same problem, but as there was no room to move them apart, it couldn't be done easily. Cheers Don... https://www.dontronics.com |

if running a usb adaptor and you want to plug it into the standard maximite just get a short ps2 ext cable and plug it into it from there.... technicians do it with least resistance |

Et Al, Many thanks for all the input. Anyway I recieved my Mini-Duinomite and brought it up on USB. Today my flexible keyboard arrived so I used the black USB-PS2 adapter that came in the pack and borrowed a HP display off a son and wired up a Power supply. Everything came up and it all works a treat. No Problems what so ever. Duinomite with both keyboard adapter and VGA connector. Tight but no problems. 
It's a small keyboard. 
The setup running while I check everything was OK. 
Sorry for the not so good photos. The keyboard is a TomTop TASJ05 USB/PS2 flexible keyboard I found on Ebay. It has ST1212 written on the keyboard's left side as well. Hope it helps. Many thanks to Geoff and Ken for the ability to run the keyboard. |

When we were laying out the dynamite boards, I told Tsvetan that we needed to get the VGA and KBD connectors as far apart as possible, so that we can use the little adapters. Because the DM-mini was tight, I didn't think we had room to do this, but he has left just enough to make it work. I tried several combinations here, and all worked. Some were tight, others had plenty of room. Glad to see you are moving in one direction. AHEAD!

I found the same thing when I was getting interested in the MaxiMite in June. None of the usual shops had them. JB, DSE, HN, etc. I found the little places like MSY etc. had them, and you can get heaps of varieties cheap from ebay. So it will be some time before we need to get a usb one going.
