Hi Guys
I'm having trouble finding a source for the low ESR Tantalum SMDs for the MiniMaximite. I have all the other parts organised.
The Silicon Chip parts list states:

22uF 6.3V Low ESR Tantalum (EIA 3216 package)
(Geoff's parts list suggests 16 Volts)

Could anyone please give me a supplier and part number for a suitable component.

Also in my research yesterday I saw "Lo ESR" values from 0.1 ohms to tens of ohms.
What exactly is a low ESR value?

Silicon Chip Magazine also says about this capacitor:
"Try replacing it or paralleling it with a higher value and/or a higher working voltage.(both of these will generally improve the ESR)".

Kind Regards

I've used 'scavenged' SMD parts for this cap on my two boards. If you get into a bind I'll send you a couple..
For crying out loud, all I wanted to do was flash this blasted LED.

I tested Altronics part R9237 and they worked. If you are buying from element14 or RS you can try a 10uF ceramic as they should be better (I have not tested them). Altronics or Jaycar do not stock the high value ceramics.

What is Low ESR? Not sure, as it is a relative term. I am still trying to figure out the requirements for this cap. Microchip originally recommended a 10uF Tant but I had trouble with that value so I went with 22uF at a higher voltage. Later Microchip added "or ceramic".

It is not a big deal if the cap that you try does not work - it will not hurt anything. As I said in the article, be aware of the issue and replace it with a higher value and/or a higher working voltage if you do hit a problem.

Thank You for your input Geoff. I finaly found some at RS components which had an ESR of 0.3ohms.

RS Part Number:692-5750 5@$2.70=$13.50 Tantalum Capacitor 520 size A 22uF 10V

Hi,

I can give you a supplier who has a 22uF 6.3V Low ESR Tantalum (EIA 3216 package)
Here's the link http://datasheet.seekic.com/datasheet/AVX_TPSA226K006R0900.h tml

By the way ESR means Equivalent Series Resistance. Regarding the 0.1 ohms to
10 ohms. The more the resistance of the capacitor is lower, the more the ripple noise is decreased so must choose the low resistance capacitor.

Goodluck!
