I got a new laptop with win 11. I activated the one drive function to back up to the cloud and also added the Personnal Vault. Well Personnal Vault obviosly has a problem it closes itself after 20 mins. then a red icoon with a cross appears on the one drive icon, i click on it and it tells me to open the Vault because my files are not backed up. To do this it has Two Factor Verification so I have to open my Gmail a/c to get the code. I think I already have about 10 codes in Gmail. I'm sick of this Personnal Vault, but the box you have to tick to disable it is missing. This has apparently been an issue since last May. So I thought of getting rid of OneDrive altogether and backing up to an external drive but it seems the only option is to back up to the cloud. The only way to back up is to Copy all your files to the External Drive. This laptop is just for home use between my Daughter and Myself, why the hell do they make it so difficult. security, security everywhere not really neeeded just for a home computer to browse the web and get emails. Lucky I know a bit about what I'm doing, what about the little old lady who just wants a personal computer, it would be useless. I would go back to Win XP in a heartbeat but there is no antivirus. If there was just an easy way to back up my files and ditch OneDrive and Microsoft Account and log in with a local account instead. I've got Win 11 on one of my machines but I've never depended on one-drive since it first appeared. I simply don't like the idea that my stuff is stored on someone else's server at some unknown point or points in the world. I'm just old fashioned I suppose. :) Even if it's installed I never use it. I'm afraid that for some things (like Minecraft) you can't escape having to have a Microsoft account. :( Backing up is on a Raid 1 NAS. That's straight mirroring, so 2x 3TB drives gives me 3TB of storage that I can access from any of the machines in the house via wi-fi or CAT5. It's only on the local network so it's not accessible from anywhere else. I also have another 3TB on the internal network for less important stuff. That doesn't get backed up. I'm considering another 2-drive NAS at some point rather than swapping this for a 4-drive. It's extra resiliency. It costs a bit of money to set up the NAS but you don't have to pay Microsoft anything to use it and you can always add another. You have to remember that Win 11 is designed for people who just want to plug it in and go. You can't do anything clever with it without effort, you need a Microsoft account, One Drive, Office 365 etc. - i.e. you need to accept all defaults. It does it's own security stuff, you don't install anything else. If you treat it like that Joe & Jemima Bloggs of 99 Creaking Crescent will find it ok. :) Mick Zilog Inside! nascom.info for Nascom & Gemini Preliminary MMBasic docs & my PCB designs |

I have never liked or trusted Microsoft accounts. When I bought bought my current laptop I struggled getting it use a local account during the initial setup. For a couple of months afterwards it would start the initial setup process again and insist I had to have a Microsoft account. Each time I was able to eventually manage to bypass the setup and log into my local account. Eventually found a registry edit that seems to finally fixed the issue. As far as backup software, I've opted to use EaseUS Todo backup. There is a Free edition that handle basic backups. However I went ahead and paid for the full Home Edition with a lifetime license. Many more backup and restore options like disk imaging and universal hardware restore. Backups run very fast on my hardware and restoring individual files was simple. I am not a Mad Scientist... I'll look at some third party backup options so that I can hopefully get rid of my microsoft account. A while ago when logging into Element14 I put in my username and password then Microsoft butted in and wanted my Pin as well. I just want a computer that is mine without big brother telling me what I can and can't do. "It is better to be ignorant and ask a stupid question than to be plain Stupid and not ask at all" |

I agree with Mixtel90 on the first two paragraphs of his argument. I keep it simple. I have a 2.5" 1TB external USB3 disk and copy the data from the most important locations to that external disk every week. I keep my computer minimal in terms of functionality and data layout on purpose. The data is important, the rest is not, you can reinstall software when you need it. I have organized the data via directories according to priority and depending on that I copy certain data only once a month such as photo data and the rest more often. There are several options: 1.) manually, 2.) FreeFileSync, 3.) Robocopy, 4,) Microsoft SyncToy combined with the Task Scheduler, 5.) Use Dsynchronize, 6.) Use SyncToy, 7.) Sync Center. I have Windows 10 and have disabled the annoying compulsive update behavior for Windows 11 with a registry key. My Intel NUC is hardware-wise prepared for Windows 11 but that is not going to happen anymore. As soon as Windows 10 is out of maintenance I will switch to Linux Mint. I know that you can still use Windows 10 after it is no longer maintained but I'm done with Microsoft Windows and their Cloud obsession. That I may not be able to run all the software is annoying but I'm willing to do that, there's always the Wine emulator under Linux. I use Wine on Linux Mint on an old laptop. So I'm looking forward to Microsoft stopping the maintenance of that crappy Windows program. If you use AI, you lose your mind. |

I have a neat stack of two baby PCs. The little fanless one with Win 10 is what I use daily, the other has a fan (and a much higher spec) and runs Win 11. I'm not sure what I'll do in future - possibly keep Windows on one and move the other to Mint. I have another little fanless available though, so that one might become the linux box. I need Windows of some sort on one of them as my design software needs it (won't run under wine). Mick Zilog Inside! nascom.info for Nascom & Gemini Preliminary MMBasic docs & my PCB designs |

I'm thinking of putting Linux Mint on my Workshop machine, I'll continue to look for a backup option for the Laptop. "It is better to be ignorant and ask a stupid question than to be plain Stupid and not ask at all" |

W11 can be a bit....how should I put it...."Tiring" at times. One of my MAIN issues with it, is how it tries to FORCE you to login with a MS account. Generally speaking, W11 will FORCE you to do that, if it can find an active internet connection during the setup process. To be able to use a local account, either disable the WiFi in the BIOS, or unplug the ethernet cable - or both. If W11 setup can't find the internet, you can then setup a local account. If W11 setup CAN find the internet, it will FORCE you to use a MS account. I posted a thread a while back here that allows you customize either W10 or W11 installs, and you can pretty much remove anything you don't like INCLUDING the forced MS logon crap, just by ticking various boxes as to how you want the Windoze to work, then it builds an auto-install script that the installer uses to setup the machine. This worked really well, to make a cut-down version of W11, and was pretty painless to do. Naturally, you still need to employ many of today's security stuff, as hackers and virus-writers are getting rather clever these daze..... Smoke makes things work.
