Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Maybe this is just me, but this forum is polluted with screen size commercials about every second page you open. I am not happy with that, and feel more and more discouraged to hang out on this forum. Especially on my mobile it is annoying since the commercials exceed screen size, and you have to search for a way to close them. Nothing is free Volhout, some google adverts are needed to pay for the server hosting. But the ads I think you are referring to are called Vignette ads. I dont like these ads either, and have repeatedly turned these off, but the advertising idiots at Google keeps turning them back on, as see in this screenshot I just took. So I have ticked them off, again, for the third time. If they start popping up again, instead of feeling discouraged to hang out on the forum, just let me know. Glenn How much is the server hosting? I'm sure the community might prefer to donate rather than suffer the adverts |

Brave webrowser silently blocks ads. Sites seem to think that all is as it should be. :) I use both Brave and Opera concurrently. Brave for YouTube, since YouTube refuses to play in Opera, and pretty much the rest in Opera. I'm visiting TBS in Brave at the moment and there are no ads whatsoever. In Opera, what I usually use for TBS, I see the side ads and a banner at the bottom. To be honest I don't even notice them. |

I also felt that the commercials got out of hand, in particular size-wise. I installed AdBlock Pro on my phone and now it’s fine, however, I see the point that ads pay for the hosting. I second Peter‘s question: how much would it the community cost per year to keep the forum ad-free? Thomas |

I'm also happy to pay a small stipend to do without, otherwise I'm going to have to start blocking. If anything they have gotten worse on my phone in the last hour. Tom Edited 2024-09-01 20:11 by thwill Game*Mite, CMM2 Welcome Tape, Creaky old text adventures |

I installed Opera and Brave on my linux machine. I know Opera from W10. The Phone is more difficult. I am on old android. On Opera I needed to change settings to block adds Brave seems to be pre-set to block adds. The issue with my phone is that it does not have 1000 pixels wide screen. So the adds are huge. I think these 1000 pixels are acceptable on a 4k display. Not on my phone. Brave works nice on the phone.. Volhout Edited 2024-09-01 22:28 by Volhout PicomiteVGA PETSCII ROBOTS |

I use Adblock Plus and Chrome on my laptop and don't see any ads. On my android phone, there are some, but I don't view that site that way often, and I barely notice them. If that was the only way I viewed the site, I might take some action. I also would be willing to pay something for an ad-free site. The problem with blocking ads is that Glenn then doesn't get the income. That's why I would personally prefer to help fund the site direct |

Fine with me, but we aren't the only users of the site, there are also the various Off Grid, Electronics & Misc groups, they might want a say as well? |

Doesn't need to be a subscription. Depending on the cost I was just thinking of a small group of "angels" who could provide the funding. |

I use AdBlock as well running on Opera, it's great for keeping the ads down on YouTube vids. I haven't had any ads for a few years now. I'm happy to kick in for the running costs of the forum. I'm also happy to kick in for the time spent in development of the MM O/S (yeah, I know Geoff and Peter - it's not necessary... but there'll be a lot of people who would like to contribute for appreciation of the work involved) John |
