Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Add USB, 5V and 3.3V cheaply.

Just spotted this post in "sci.electronics.design" newsgroup.

Add USB and 5 V and 3.3V power and felt it could be of interest to some members.

From Jan Panteltje (regular contributor to many user groups and Electronics Book Author)

Cheapest way to add USB and 5 V and 3.3V power to a RS232 PIC project
Got some ebay USB To RS232 TTL PL2303HX Auto Converter Module Converter Adapter for arduino
ebay object: 360750555245

Module has 5V and 3.3 V out (from the USB power).
The PL2303 works 100% OK with Linux native drivers.
Just connect to RS232 in and RS232 out, and power,
and no need to write USB code, or get a special PIC, or bother about licenses,
or maxmin^h^him chips.
and all that at only 99 dollar cents a piece.
I just build one into an existing RS232 project, simplifies a lot of things.
Any terminal program or script can talk to it.

It is also a lot cheaper than external USB to RS232 adaptors (wut hte same chip!),
just solder the pins into your board.

Bus 005 Device 006: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port

PS it has a red LED too, to show USB is connected.

Googled and found this at 99 cents (USD):

But does not ship to Australia.

But this one does at $1.47AUD

Hey Don,

If you ever get the chance to go to China you will see row after row of massive warehouses full of these 'goodies'. I reckon any BSF member would have fun over there; and would easily be able to spend just $100 and buy a lifetime's supply of 'bits & pieces'.

So not a bad business these bulk Chinese sellers have. In the last 1 month the seller (your second link) has nearly 26,000 positive feedback scores. Assuming at least $1 per sale then thats not a bad $return$ in the month! And there is probably an equal number of buyers that don't rate the seller - another big handful of $$'s to add to this figure.

And do you think they bother about the 1% giving negative feedback!

All I would add is that if you do buy some of these 'cheapies', then buy several (not just one) and be prepared to throw a quantity away - still works out cheaper though than the 'genuine' thing!!

WW

I get lots of my samples and components from AliExpress , you can get anything and everything there, prices are very decent and I only once had a problem with one of the items which didn't function correctly. After complaining I got a full refund immediately. I highly recommend this to anyone who doesn't know it.
