HP Selling New PCs with Windows 7 Again

Have you been thinking about buying a new computer, but you can’t stand the idea of dealing with Windows 8 and its lack of a true Start menu? Apparently, you’re not alone and the PC companies are hearing your cries, starting with the folks at HP.

Read more at
http://www.megatechnews.com/hp-selling-new-pcs-windows-7/

Read the footnote, they are offering $150 off to downgrade? to Windows 7.

Cheers Don...

I am OK with Windows 8.1. I have one machine still running Win 7 but only because I have been unable (so far) to upgrade it.

As for a Start menu, Microsoft's attempts at a Start button in Win 8.1 are a fraud. I use Classic Shell for a real Start button and a menu. It also has other improvements. Several things I find useful are the ability to remove all transparency from the Taskbar, a title back on Internet Explorer pages, and a page loading progress indicator for IE.

Like you Bob, I use Classic Shell and easily talked Mick into using it also.

We both said "Why are we converting Windows 8 machines back to Windows 7 work-alikes to be useful?"

I had to load down the latest versions of a lot of programs in order to get them to work, but I am reasonably happy now with W8.1

It does have some nice features.

Big thumbs up to Classsic Shell, I use it on my Win7 pc.

Its not unusual for providers to supply machines with a previous OS for a year or more into a new OS's life time. It would be driven by big business, who insist new hardware is supplied with a old OS, or loose the sale.

I understand the reasons, been in the same boat. Working as IT manager for a large engineering firm, ordered 10 new Dells. Win Vista had been out for about a year, but I requested the new PC's be supplied with Win XP or no sale. They supplied them

The main reason I insisted on the older OS was because we used a software package called Sigmanest, cad/cam/nesting with stock management, about $6,000 per licence, and we had 8 licences. Sigmanest did not support Win Vista, a new version was in development but would be months down the track.

Also, most staff don't like change. They just want to do their job, and don't care about new features. If they can get a PC with a OS they are familiar with, they will insist on it.

There's be a lot of hype on the net ever since last January when 8 was officially launched(in NZ, that is).

I have several 8 and 7 machines, and I actually prefer 8 these days.
Even without the start menu - I don't really find the lack of a start menu to be that big a deal, really. Not to the extent that some on the net are making it out to be.

I am perfectly happy to use the start screen if and when that is needed. Generally speaking, I spend all my time on the desktop, so rarely need to go to the start screen anyway.

Having said that, I do think it would have been nice, if MS gave users of 8 the choice of the new GUI, or reverting back to a start-menu type GUI. By all means, make Metro the default GUI on install, but under Control Panel or something, it would have been nice if there was an option so that those who preferred the older Start menu way of doing things, could opt for that if they wanted. MS forcing Metro on everyone probably was not really the brightest idea, as many would resent it.

I guess it has been good for the likes of Start-8 and Classic Shell though.

EDIT: Just cos I wanted to try out Classic Shell, I have installed it - pretty neat, I have to say. I was surprised and very pleased to find that Classic Shell causes 8 to boot directly to the desktop - me like.

All,

I actually like my windows 8.1 box (dell xps8700 with radeon r9 270 and 32gb str ssd). I find it much faster than my win 7 PCs, i still am not convinced with the metro screen and as I dont have a touch screen i use it with classic shell to get a win7 look a like.

Probably the biggest issue i have with win 8.1 was the forcing me to create a windows email account and its mad sequence of errors because it didnt like the username i selected or the password then the security questions all for an email acct i dont want... Then every power up required a signin to that acct...Somehow i stopped that and now dont have to log in but many apps dont work until you do login... Hence me not really using them..

One question i may as well ask is how do you exit app based progs eg. The built in PDF reader? I dontlike these things clogging memory when i dont need them

Regards

Mick,

PS typing this on my iPad whilst in hospital waiting for an attempt to open a 100% blocked artery due for tomorrow morning..

PPS Don came to see me today and i showed him the sketch the cardiologist gave me and the gap where the blockage s and he said "just insert a maximite here and all will be fine" i laughed so much I nearly had a coronary there and then

Alt + F4 is the app slayer just as it has been for applications for many years.

Good luck for tomorrow.

Or move your mouse to the top of the screen until the arrow becomes a hand, then click and drag it to the bottom of the screen.

Thank Bob, Groggy and all my TBS buddies.

They sucsessfully fitted me out with a uMite ..... Err stent and found another less critical blockage a bit further along that i need to get fixed on monday (due to diabetes they want to minimise the dye to protect the kidneys) in a second procedure...

Strange they removed the red X close... Must have save so much screen space to remove that one... Thanks now i can put my pc to sleeep without worrying about what is left open in memory...

Alt-f4 doesnt make sense in a touchscreen environment and Dons swipe seems clumsy to me..

Anyway i will try them out when i get home from hospital.... Waiting for missus now .. Then back in Sunday for Monday procedure...

Regards,

Mick

If you have a touch screen, you can also close the app with a swipe down.

Mick,

I was in the Royal Melbourne Hospital about 4 years back for supposed cardiac insufficiency. Fortunately for me, it turned out I had no such problems. Just a test that was ordered, because of my advanced age, gave bogus results.

So I ended up in hospital to check out the reason for the supposed problem. They inserted a bit of gadgetry in the femoral artery (in the groin) and pushed it up who knows where. I said to the guy who had to explain what was happening, "What if there is a problem with it all?" and he replied, "You won't know about it." I remember laying flat out for hours with pressure applied to seal the artery and I was desperate for a leak.

Good luck again for Monday. I don't envy you having to do it all again.

Hi Bob,

Yes that is the Angiogram, The stent is similar but they feed a collapsed wire mesh into the area and inflate a balloon to open the artery..

I had the Angio gram on Tuesday the first stent Thursday and another Stent Monday. They would have done the lot in one go but with diabetic patients they worry about the kidneys ... I had some internal bleeding, around the groin, requiring some extra 10min lots (about 3 or 4) and have ended up with a largish purple blotch and a small lump that will clear by itself...

Now a funny conversation whilst the nurses were applying pressure to try to disperse the blot beneath the surface, this is very close to verbatim and not what a normal red blooded male likes the other patients to overhear.

Nurse 1 "Yes he has got a small one" (referring to the clot) .... I think
Nurse 2 "I have pressed it down for about 10 minutes"
Nurse 1 "And it hasnt gotten any bigger"

My embarrassment was worse than the 150 people that kept coming over to stare at my groin....

What has this to do with micros or windows 8.1??? Nothing but it was funny nonetheless.

Regards,
